Like, a chess set with the TF2 gang as the pieces. Pawns would all be Scouts (no offense to Scouts or anything, but there’s a lot of you and you’re always out in front and you die pretty quick). On one side, the rooks could be Heavies, the knights could be soldiers, the bishops could be spies. Medic could be king, and pyro, with the whole gender question currently up in the air, could be queen.
On the other side of the board, the rooks could be sentry guns, the knights could be Demomen, and the bishops could be snipers. Which leaves the Engie as king and, well, I guess the Pyro as queen again? Maybe the pawns could be level 1 sentries, and the rooks could be, uh… hm. I guess I haven’t quite figured it out, and yet I don’t feel like deleting everything I just typed.
Got an alternate setup? Help me out, here.

Hmm…
Shouldn’t both sides be the same, just BLU and RED teams? I’d have:
Pawns: Scouts
Rooks: Sentries (Level 3)
Knights: Demomen (They can shoot over people’s heads, and the knight can jump people)
Bishops: Snipers (they only seem to move in a few directions)
Queen: Pyro, for the same reason as you.
King: Pick a class, any class, I don’t know who to choose.

Problem is, there’s six different pieces in a chess game, but nine different classes in TF2. I suppose the blue and red could be opposite like you suggested, or perhaps there could be more than one type of pawn, rook, bishop, etc?

What I meant to say was “The blue and red teams could be different classes like you suggested”

Good idea Chris, maybe you could find a programmer that would make it. I’d sure as heck play it. Ooh ooh and online play.

Im actually building a chess php script at the moment.
I might actually look into this to add as a sort of joke piece set.
If you really wanted to flesh this idea out, you can have custom(faeries) pieces to make use of all nine classes
Different starting positions, variation on the normal rules, etc.
If the rules got nailed down I could add it in.

Medic and Heavy as the king and queen, surely? The hot TF2 couple.

Pawns: Soldiers - Because they’re the standard class, and relatively slow-moving.
Rook: Scouts - Because they’re very fast moving and effective provided they’ve got a straight shot to their target.
Bishop: Sniper - Because they’re effective at any range provided you’ve set up the rather difficult shot.
Knight: Demoman - Because the sudden directional change mid-move can be akin to the demoman bouncing his bombs off of walls and stuff.
Queen: Heavy - Because you don’t want to fucking mess with the Heavy, but it’s really a support unit.
King: Engineer - Useless in a straight-up fight, but vital to the battle.
Alternates: Pyro would work well as a pawn. Medic and Spy are both too specific to be useful in chess.

Engy as King, Sentry Gun as Queen, perhaps.
Greater love hath no man, etc. etc.

I totally agree with Heavy/Medic as the king and queen. A TF2 chess set would be a comedy set - and this is a great “couple”.
Heavy is king, obviously - because he moves slowly! He’s also usually put in a position of importance by Valve in its branding. Thus leaving the medic as queen. This is also appropriate - as the medic is tall and thin - like the usual queen chess piece. The medic is also reasonably agile.
Scouts are pawns, obviously - because they move out into the field first in both games. And they’re both smaller.
Engineer is rook/castle - due to the the “fortification” motif.
Only Soldier or Demoman should be knight - due to rocket/sticky jumping. I prefer the demoman - simply because of his lack of “linearity” and somewhat more indirect damage - he feels more like a knight does in chess.
That leaves the bishop as a “freebie”. I prefer the Pyro for this. The pyro is sort of the correct shape. And the personality sort of “feels” right.
I’d leave out the sniper and the spy intentionally - as they’re not really analogous to any chess piece. And they’re also too thin, from a visual perspective.

thats a good idea

I’d favor having the spy as knight, because the spy is usually sneaking around enemies without any direct confrontation.

Hey there. I’m sure you don’t know me, but like everyone else, I know you. :P You should try to register around the PHW forums.
Anyway, on the matter, I had a few ideas:
- Pawn: Scout (definitely)
- Knight: Soldier (rocket-jumpin’ from one place to another!)
- Rook: Heavy (another given)
- Bishop: Pyro ((it just feels adequate, y’know? The way they move and all)
- Queen: Medic (c’mon, this one is a bit obvious. The queen backs up the king, right? Just as you’d see a Medic backing up the most important character)
- King: Civilian (I read somewhere they’re planning to reintroduce the character. I mean, in the old days the task on many maps was to defend the Civilian, so it just fits) or Flag (of course flags don’t move by themselves, but it would fit well too, wouldn’t it?)
What do you think?

As a matter of fact, I’ve been planning and organizing for a game, while not dissimilar, it had a very different scheme to it. This project, tentatively titled “half life chess” utilizes the old chessboard we all know and love, but adds an FPS spin on it.
Players move their pieces as per usual, until two opposing pieces inevitably co-exist on the same square. The game would then revert into the Half life deathmatch we all know and love, in which the two characters battle to the death in an arena (in my mind simply a box-like map littered with debris) which the victor claims the square.
Different pieces (i.e. queen or pawn) would have a suitably different weapon loadout, with a pawn having very little weaponry (perhaps just a pistol) whereas the queen would have quite a formidable arsenal, to suit chess’s startegic gameplay, the attacking player would posses the gravity gun.
I believe this would create a very interesting game, with both strategic thinking AND quick reflexes playing a part in the gameplay.
and on a more personal note, a bunch of quick one-on-one deathmatches? What more could you ask for?
If anyone is interested in this idea, please email me at the address given or, as i would prefer, assemble a group and create it yourself, as i am a uni student and have very little time for such endeavors, as much as it pains me.
