World of Goo Gets Sucked Into Steam’s Pipe

October 10th, 2008 · 41 Comments · Games, The Wonder of Tom Francis

World of Goo, the award-winning, highly acclaimed indie goo-based building game, is coming to Steam next week.

I preordered this direct from the creators a couple weeks ago and have been playing and enjoying it, but I was a bit miffed to hear it would appear on Steam with achievements and auto-updates.  Was I gonna miss out because I’d already purchased the game?  Happily, others shared my concerns and the developers are working with Valve to allow people who have already purchased the game to activate it on Steam (despite it being DRM free and thus containing no CD codes).  Great news!  (I learned about this on Tom’s blog.)

I haven’t finished World of Goo yet, but when I do I’ll talk about it a bit more.  It will be available over Steam on October 13.

    Nice tag.

    Sweet! I was also annoyed that they announced it on Steam *after* I went to all the trouble of pre-ordering it. I’m really pleased that the guys at 2DBoy are cool with getting the keys transferred.

    @David:

    ditto.

    But either way, Its still worth purchasing.

    I wish Penny Arcade would do this. I felt the same way about On the Rainslick Episode 1.

    Who updated this? Surely it was a fiercesome masked man of sorts!

    See, this is why today’s world sucks (except in this particular instance). “You paid 11 bucks to see this movie in the theater? Well you’ll have to buy the DVD if you want to see the ALTERNATE ENDING.” “Hey, remember when you paid $20 for the DVD of that one movie? Time to pony up another 20 for the SPECIAL EDITION! Now with 400% more ALTERNATE ENDINGS!”

    @6

    Yup, did that too. Still didn’t kill the silent one either. got there, but never pulled it off.

    Indie devs are always happier to do achievements and activations and stuff. Too bad the big companies don’t.

    Didn’t World of Goo just start off as a tech-demo-ish kinda toy to mess around with, where all you could do originally was just build one tower?

  • 13 MadTinkerer // Oct 11, 2008 at 1:19 pm

    “despite it being DRM free and thus containing no CD codes”

    If you pre-ordered, you got a “magic key” code that unlocked the pre-order 1 chapter demo. That’s what they’re going to use for Steam.

    noobie: Yes, they started off with that and have made a full game out of it. Just like Braid and Portal.

    Lol, how about this?:

    “Gorton Valves on Sale”

    I’d say that’s the best one yet that doesn’t directly reference a game.

    Actually, nevermind:

    Especially Synergy, i’ve liked that game for a long time.

    Anyone download the beta of it? The music is AWESOME.

  • 27 Bobic // Oct 13, 2008 at 10:57 am

    @24 Synergy is a bad mod. I thought the zombie one was way too unbalanced, the car one was stupid, and I haven’t tried age of chivalry yet. WHY NOT MINERVA??

  • 28 Kowl Slaw // Oct 13, 2008 at 1:02 pm

    I think they might of been trying to get some full conversions in, not just single player mods with the same weapons and stuff. You know, different stuff.

  • 29 Killa-Ewok // Oct 13, 2008 at 1:57 pm

    @27

    A bad mod? A buggy one, yes, but not a bad one.

  • 30 Bobic // Oct 13, 2008 at 2:08 pm

    I just thought that it was bad because all that they added was some (buggy) co-op support and a handful of underwhelming maps. Also I think a mod is bad if its buggy..
    And @28 you’re right, but I WANT MINERVA WITHOUT EP1

  • 31 Bobic // Oct 13, 2008 at 2:16 pm

    CHRIS POST ABOUT THIS!! GAMING SITES OVERRUN WITH MALE ENHANCEMENT ADS!!
    NO THANKS, VIMAX, I’LL PASS

  • 32 Sinister Minister // Oct 13, 2008 at 2:18 pm

    @Bobic: Uhh, they hired Adam Foster, they guy who made MINERVA. I think that speaks for itself as to what Valve thinks of it.

  • 33 Kowl Slaw // Oct 13, 2008 at 2:21 pm

    Sounds like a good mod…I looked into it before, but never downloaded it….and it looked pretty cool.

  • 34 Killa-Ewok // Oct 13, 2008 at 2:29 pm

    Synergy also made different stuff for the games, for instance, in EP2, you get a partyvan for the rest of the guys to go when you get the jalopy

  • 37 Cpt. Falcon // Oct 13, 2008 at 4:58 pm

    Chris! People are taking opposite stances on issues! We cannot resolve this conflict! Divine intervention is required to pass final judgement on the mod named SYNERGY.
    Please keep in mind that Synergy OB was recently released, and they’re working hard on updates to fix many bugs and glitches. If you could take a look at Synergy1.1, it ran very well with hardly any bugs. OB was a step in a new direction, quite a big step actually, and so a lot of new bugs were presented.

  • 38 Kowl Slaw // Oct 13, 2008 at 5:00 pm

    Would a new blog post be in the category of divine intervention?

  • 40 Bobic // Oct 13, 2008 at 7:39 pm

    An odd thing that I noticed with synergy is that, while I don’t have Half-Life 2, With synergy I could play it. WTF??

  • 41 Killa-Ewok // Oct 14, 2008 at 1:04 am

    Bobic, I think you have Deathmatch, GMod, or the Half-Life 2 demo.
