That is, if this shady blog is to be trusted.
I’m happy to hear it; I’ve been playing a lot more heavy lately and am really enjoying it. Only problem is, I stink if I don’t have a medic taking care of me constantly, so it’s good to know that Valve is looking at ways to make the heavy “more viable when he has no Medic to pair with.”

I barely ever play the heavy, but that would be a nice addition to him.
2 Fleeka // Jul 1, 2008 at 10:12 pm
continuing from that, I think thats the main reason why I don’t play heavy, because they aren’t that good without a medic at all times.
3 O'Smiles // Jul 1, 2008 at 10:15 pm
I thought the Heavy was meant to be a medic-dependent class, just as the Sniper was meant to be a (sorta) Engineer-dependent class. Okay, bad example.

I was just looking at my hours and noticed that heavy was my least played class… how nice.

I really only play heavy so i can spam the “Go go go!” voice command. I do that solely to hear the one that says, “MOOVE!”
7 Mr_Wizard // Jul 1, 2008 at 10:46 pm
I tried to post there, but for some reason I cant. Must be because I am new. Oh well.
I like the idea of the Shield Sasha from that thread. It just seems to me that the posters have it backwards. They say the shield should only function when he’s firing. I think it should only function when he isn’t firing, and he lowers it to spin up/fire. This helps me as a heavy reach the point I need to be, while ensuring that when I do decide to fire, I am not some shielded spray firing sentry.
I also like the rage idea, where his chance for a critical goes up the lower his health. I think that should be how the class is normally, though. So maybe it could be a class update similar to the pyro air burst.
I think he should get sledgehammerheads attached to rope, and hold those like brass knuckles. Punching causes him to slide forward a little bit, with the weight of the sledgehammer dragging him forward. This will make it harder to get away from him once he starts punching. He throws punches at a slower rate though, so a heavy cant simply punch his way to a speed boost.
The shotgun is hard. As it is normally we heavies dont use it very often. When we run out of ammo we use it in a vain hope of killing anyone chasing us as we back away. We have to us it, because they wil stay out of range of our punches and they will block us from getting ammo from their dead usually. So I am thinking a vaccuum. :D It has no ammo, it just works. It sucks ammo from the ground and a percentage of the enemies ammo. It only sucks ammo if Sasha has none, however. It could also drag enemies toward the Heavy so he can use his fists, which would be good since the vaccuum itself would do no damage.
Waiting until I can post in the thread for me to copy paste this :P Or anyone who can post in the thread can add it for me. I dont mind :D
8 PhatMan // Jul 1, 2008 at 11:09 pm
@Mr Wizard
i like your vacuum idea. i think it should only suck as much ammo as you need tho, instead of only working when your minigun is dry. the drawback is now you dont have a secondary ranged weapon.
i actually do use the shotgun when im heavy, i use it for when im running around killing 1 guy at a time. i only use the minigun when its more than one person, or if that person is hard to kill.
however, in all honesty, i bet if i looked at my tf2 stats, my time using shotgun and minigun are both lower than fists, maybe even combined.
if im on D in 2fort, i switch to heavy, wait in the lofts or battlements, and put my dukes up.
aw what am i saying, ive had medics get yell at me before for charging the enemy base swinging my fists and spamming the battlecry voicechat!
its just so fun.
9 Nyarlathotep // Jul 1, 2008 at 11:15 pm
Heavy is my second least-played class, besides sniper (Man, FUCK Snipers.), but Medic is my main, and there’s a good friend of mine who plays Heavy a lot. This is good news to me.
10 PhatMan // Jul 1, 2008 at 11:15 pm
oh and i’ve forgotten. first of all who hasnt thought of knuckledusters/brassknuckles.
and second, ive always wanted some sort of sprint/charge thing that you can use when you have your fists out. it should work like in Gears of War when you sprint, how your visibility is kinda reduced (hard to do in 1st person…) and steering is difficult. AND if you swing your fist when you stop sprinting, your momentum will make it a crit! ive always wanted that for demoman too, when i bomb jump across the map and smack some sniper in the face with my bottle a scrumpy i think the momentum should come into play.
11 Mr_Wizard // Jul 1, 2008 at 11:16 pm
I do that too when I am going from base to base :D Its not like the minigun is going to do much good then.
Favorite part of being a heavy is how they scatter when I round a corner. I have my keys set up so I can easily do a battlecry as I round a corner.

The heavy is fine as it is. The spy or scout should have been next.
18 Neoviper // Jul 2, 2008 at 3:36 am
heavy is just fine with a medic, but without one it really is hard to play effectively, glad they’re addressing this.
although I really want to see 20 spies running around trying to fool each other.
19 Dave // Jul 2, 2008 at 4:10 am
Seems most applicable in small games, when there are no medics around but you still want to play Heavy.
I encounter that often!
On my console!
Which is restricted to small games!
Man, is it a shame that VALVE RUINED CONSOLES!!!!four
20 Dave // Jul 2, 2008 at 4:12 am
On a more serious and less hateful note, I heard someone bring up barb-wire punches. You take damage with every punch, but they hit for more.
21 rammingspeed42 // Jul 2, 2008 at 5:55 am
I think that there should be a replacement for the shotgun as well, but I think it should be something to the tune of another, smaller, repeating weapon. Larger than the sniper’s SMG of course, but something that is a quicker weapons than, and has more deadly potential than, the shotty.
But I like that, “this shady blog.” Who can you believe on the net these days, right?
22 PsyWarrior // Jul 2, 2008 at 5:56 am
Yay, now is coward killing time!
I enjoy playing heavy a lot. It’s a tactical class requiring me to think about what I’m doing. Also, miniguns and giant fists. And he has the best voice macros…
It’ll be interesting to see what happens when we have effective independent heavies, without necessarily needing the services of a medic. I wonder how Valve intend to pull that off without also making medic-paired heavies more effective…
23 Chijts // Jul 2, 2008 at 5:59 am
I barely play heavy too, but perhaps to make him more viable when going solo would be to increase his mobility with the gattling gun…then maybe reducing its damage to balance it out. But then the class might not be as clearly defined.
Making the heavy more able to handle going solo is a very difficult thing to achieve, as in the teams I’ve played with, if you see a heavy everyone tries to take him out as quick as possible.
Also I think the momentum for melee weapons is a great idea. I can picture scouts leaping from off high to smack some heavy right on the noggin. Would be cool.
24 Erik Z // Jul 2, 2008 at 6:13 am
The only problem I have with the heavy is that he’s so slow when shooting. People start dancing around corners when shooting at him.
They hardly take any damage and you’re dead.
How about a paralyzing agent? Or a stun?
Oooo! How about knockback punch? I love it when people get caught by the sentry in mid air and then tossed across the map. A knockback punch does 100 points of damage and has you flying across the map in midair.

Geez Pentadact. Now I really, really want wing mirrors. That’s one of the best ideas I’ve heard.

28 Lack_26 // Jul 2, 2008 at 6:44 am
They want to make the Heavy solo-able, therefore I guess they want some sort of healing device, to cut reliability on the medic, but not make the medic unwanted, now, here is my idea.
Instead of, say the shotgun you have a cardboard cut-out of the medic, he does similar healing to the heavy than a normal medic does (possibly the same, while the cardboard cut-out keeps in sync with the art style). This is deployed in a similar way to an engineer building, this would allow the heavy to secure a place defensively, while the medic ensure a good team offence, but a medic is still desirable for the mobility (possible a greater healing rate as well).
I think this is probably fairly balanced, I don’t know how the cut-out would appear to the enemy, possibly as an actually medic (the spy had a mask, and that works). It would be hilarious to see a spy back-stab a medic, only for it to fall forwards as a piece of cardboard, with the heavy turning round and obliterating the confused spy.

Shoot 40 people?
But the interesting names? Anyone have any ideas?

“Russian Reversal: Kill an enemy spy with your fists.”
31 Chijts // Jul 2, 2008 at 7:45 am
Lack 26 I like that idea, but then you could argue that he is kinda taking an engies roll (not that I have heard of an engie being so kind as to walk out to a point to provide you with a dispenser).
I think the cardboard cutout idea is also pretty slick for a spy, he could whip it out and use it as a decoy or something. To the other team as you say, it would look like a real person.
Anyway back to the heavy, maybe he could have something like Vodka in his shotgun slot that provides health (with only a few “rounds”). That way he would still have to take it out to use it.

Some of the things on the official forums I find infuriating. Its basic reading comprehension here. When Valave says they want a mechanic that makes the heavy more survivable on his own without becoming superpowerful when a medic is around. It doesnt mean the mouse should sprout spikes when a medic heals a heavy with the new weapons. It doesnt mean that the heavy should suddenly become “unhealable” It supposed to be like ubering a sniper. While the sniper will undoubtedly benefit from the uber, it doesnt make him a whole lot more effective. Where as a Heavy with a medic is drastically more effective. Thje new weapon should be beneficial when the heavy is alone, but not overpowering with a medic.
This is middle school level reading comprehension!

Just Hammer, No Sickle: Get 100 kills using only fists.
36 noclip // Jul 2, 2008 at 9:24 am
I think they’re trying to make achievements for certain classes help other classes get their own achievements. For example, the 20 Heavy assists in a single life achievement will be a lot more reasonable when the Heavy has a 20 medic-assisted kills in a single life achievement.
37 J3553 // Jul 2, 2008 at 10:00 am
What if the Engineer could hit his teammates weapons, upgrading them slightly. The draw back would be that the upgrade lasts for a short time. Imagine a minigun with missiles.
38 J3553 // Jul 2, 2008 at 10:04 am
What if his fist taunt, the one where he mimes a gun, did some damage? Not a Pyro-like instant kill, but a slightly damaging bullet shot. Maybe it could even crit.
A bonus would be the Heavy smiling at you during the freezecam shot.
39 LaZodiac // Jul 2, 2008 at 10:17 am
Speaking of Achievement names, I have atlest one that would highly decresse game productivity.
Boxing Match: Kill a full health enemy Heavy, with yourself being at full health, and both of you only useing fists. You must have atlest two other teammates taunt when you kill him, and they must be in the death cam shot.
40 S-Guy // Jul 2, 2008 at 10:34 am
I would love to see a cool replacement for the fists, but its still hilarious to see someone get punched by a heavy. I think something where a punch would send the target flying off, but not as much damage dealt would be a cool idea.
41 Mr brit // Jul 2, 2008 at 10:34 am
“Now you do my job!” Capture the intel 30 times
“I love this medic!” Get ubered by the same medic three times
“Back it up” Kill a spy who has begun the backstab animation
“Russian roulette” Kill 10 enemies without picking up any ammo.
“Communists share!” Get 30 kill assists with the shotgun
I like the idea of a Sasha that shields you while you aren’t firing, maybe at a cost of speed and slower wind up/wind down.
Instead of the shotty, a weapon which fires medkits. Rather than being fuelled by ammo, when the Heavy runs over a medkit any excess health goes into this gun. The alt. fire drops a small medkit, so the Heavy can heal up quickly in the middle of a firefight. The normal fire sends medkits with trajectory that do a small amount of damage to the enemy.
Black chainmail gloves wrapped in barbed wire
They do much more damage and can be held in front of his face for a small shield by holding fire. Tradeoff is that they are slower and do a very small amount of damage to the Heavy with each hit.
And LaZodiac, nice idea for an achievement! :D
42 Mr brit // Jul 2, 2008 at 10:37 am
I forgot to mention, the medkits he can drop can not be used by his teammates (Possible griefing?) and maybe harm the enemy if they try and pick them up? Perhaps they look slightly different or something…
43 [CHS] Talleyrand // Jul 2, 2008 at 11:20 am
Someone probably already suggested this, but what about a new gun similar to the syringe gun the medic received. The heavy would have the option of alt-clicking while firing his gun to fire bullets that healed +3 every time they hit an enemy, but they would do no damage. For a tradeoff, the gun would never crit, and every time the heavy switched to this option it would cost 50 ammo PLUS the normal cost of bullets while firing, and/or the heavy would be unable to move while firing healing bullets.
The trickiest part of this would have to be range: the heavy has to be close to the enemy for this to be at all effective, so at medium range a soldier would do more damage with a rocket launcher than the heavy would receive while healing. Fighting more enemies would make this less noticeable; the bullets that missed your primary target would hit the other enemies around it. I suppose the best way to use this attack would be a jumping maneuver: a relatively low-health heavy would get right up in an enemy’s face (or back, preferably, by jumping from a higher spot and landing near the enemy), spin up the gun (maybe while in the air), pump the enemy full of healing bullets and then, when the enemy realizes what’s happening, tear him to bits with the normal primary fire.
44 Big_B // Jul 2, 2008 at 11:23 am
I love the wing mirrors idea!
45 [CHS] Talleyrand // Jul 2, 2008 at 11:26 am
Could someone post that idea on the thread for me ^^^? I don’t have an account.
46 rammingspeed42 // Jul 2, 2008 at 11:42 am
“For the Workers!”: protect an engineer (and his buildings) from 20-25 enemies.
The Russian Bear: Go an entire match with only fists and have at least 30 kills by the match’s end.
Romanov’s Rampage: cause 100,000 damage in one life.
“See me?”: Kill twenty snipers with their scopes lifted up to their eyes.
You could replace the bullets that Sacha fired, explosive bullets in the place of what she has now.
47 LaZodiac // Jul 2, 2008 at 11:43 am
Why thank you Mr Brit. Your ideas are just as great.
And to make mine alittle funnier, the name of the acheivement would be “Man Fights Bear. Which is Bear?”
Ok, not that funny. But its works.
