So, yeah, didn’t get the Shacknews gig. Fuck.
It was pretty obvious as soon as the interview began that I wasn’t what they were looking for. And, I pretty much knew that going in, but I was hoping to go the same route that I go in all walks of my life: faking it until I get up to speed. I’ve done it before, I had hoped to do it again.
No dice — I flubbed the interview hard. I don’t have the industry awareness they need and I couldn’t pick a console out of a lineup, even if the rest of the lineup consisted of an egg, a Frenchman, and one of those old-timey bicycles with the giant front wheel.
Still, it was a good experience, and I’m not actually angry — I talked to a couple of the Shack Team guys on the phone after the interview and they explained why I suck. Just kidding! They were very complimentary of my writing and my various web endeavors, and invited me to keep in touch. They’re good guys, and I wish them luck in finding someone who will fit their needs better, even though I will forever hate whoever it is and filter his posts out of my news feed. I’ll do it! I’m crazy. Crazy like a severely disappointed fox.
In closing, fuck. I really wanted that gig, man. Stupid consoles.

If you have to play the 360 version of tf2 I feel sorry for you since you don’t have anything the pc version does (console versions don’t even have badlands or ctf_well) and you also have to play with a bunch of xbox live retards that have no idea how to play tf2. (Yes I know, I have played tf2 on 360)

Supercomputer, Myrmidont? Really? I play TF2 on a 2 year old computer I built on a $500 budget because I don’t have the money for a $400 box that’s useless for anything except playing medium-quality $60 games. PCs are SO not the expensive option.

It is sad that the gaming industry has moved away from PC’s and is hovering towards consoles. It is a real shame, to be honest, but that’s what happens. I can see why they would want someone with a wider knowledge of the industry, but I’m sorry they didn’t take you.
In all seriousness, create your own opportunities. Like NewtPulsifier said, team up with your blogging buddies and make your own gaming site. I’d read it, and so would every person here.

Sorry to hear about that, it sucks but it happens. At least now you have more experience at those sort of interviews, and won’t be caught off guard by curveball questions. Well unless the interviewer stands up, drops their kegs, plays portishead in the background, and asks you geographical questions.

Commiserations, but you don’t need those console lovers, my computer is about 4 years old, I’ve spend about £400 (with cost of living included that is, for all intents and purposes, $400) (inluding buying a mid-range GPU 2 years ago) on it in that time and it’s served me faithfully I can play TF2 on mid-high and even cyrsis on low-mid settings. Hardly a supercomputer but I’ve got more out of this than any console I could ever buy.
