Shacknews Intarview Liveblog!1!11!!!eleven

August 19th, 2008 · 46 Comments · Interviews

4:09pm: Okay, so, this is clearly a fake liveblog.  I couldn’t do the real thing because, a) the actual interview took place a few hours earlier than I had expected due to a time zone mix-up,  and, b) liveblogging my own interview, as it turns out, would have been pretty much impossible.  Sorry!

It was a real plan, and I really honestly intended to do it, but as I was driving home, trying to light a cigarette and find songs on my iPod and eat some Chicken McNuggets all at the same time, it dawned on me that multi-tasking isn’t really my strong suit.  I can’t imagine how I would have conducted the interview while writing about it simultaneously.  What a stupid idea.  Why didn’t anyone smart and level-headed warn me?

Anyway.  Had my interview, and I’ll probably post about it in a day or so.  In the meantime, I’ll be in TF2 eating sanviches.

4:10pm: They want to talk about consoles. I’m drawing a blank. Quick, someone, in the comments, name a console! I can stall them for a while by pretending I’m choking on some chewing gum, but HURRY

3:55pm: Got the right headphones on now. They were curious as to why I hadn’t been on mic in a few minutes, so I cleverly covered my iPod goof by explaining I had been outside shooting at neighborhood cats. Is that smooth or what? See, I can think under pressure. Hm, looks like they accidentally hung up again.

3:52pm: The interview just took a strange turn. Instead of asking me questions or talking about gaming, Steve instead started singing me the collected works of Sheena Easton. I soon realize that instead of wearing my computer’s headphones I’ve been wearing my iPod headphones.

I mean my wife’s iPod headphones. My wife’s. I don’t have any of Sheena Easton’s music on my iPod! I’m a dude, dude. I would never listen to any of Sheena’s many ground-breaking hits like “Morning Train” or “Modern Girl”, and I definitely would never, ever tear up at her beautiful rendition of “Wind Beneath My Wings” and “We’ve got Tonight”, her magical, heart-wrenching duo with Kenny Rogers. I’m, like, into Slayer and shit.

3:48pm: Got them back on the line. Everyone I’m talking to sounds annoyed. I think Skype needs a patch or something to fix that bug.

3:36pm: To show how into games I am, I do a few impressions of notable gaming characters. My first impression, that of Gordon Freeman, consists of me remaining completely silent for several minutes. They keep asking if I’m still there, but I’m so dedicated to my craft I don’t answer. I’m into the role. Wait. I think they hung up.

Damn, I was going to do Navi from Zelda N64 next. “HEY! HEY! HEY! LISTEN! HEY! LISTEN! HEY!” That would have gone down a storm.

3:27pm: Steve is asking me questions about my background, where I’m from, what I’ve done… hmm, he seems awfully nosy about me all of the sudden. Why so many questions, Steve? Why all this sudden interest in me? Hm? Hm??? Oh, right, it’s an interview. I should lighten up and stop swearing at him, I guess.

3:24pm: Successfully connected over Skype! I probably should have created a new account name for this interview, as “leatherbottom69″ seems a bit inappropriate now that I think about it. I don’t want them to get the wrong idea, after all — I can totally be a top if necessary.

3:13pm: Getting ready for my interview with Steve Gibson and other members of the Shack Team, which should be underway shortly.

When I was told the interview would be conducted over Skype, I was a little worried. I mean, what if my sparkling personality doesn’t really shine over the intarfone? So, thinking an in-person approach would be better, I broke into Steve Gibson’s mansion early this morning and stood over his bed silently until he awoke. I could tell he was impressed by my go-gettiveness even as he had his personal bodyguards escort me from his property once they’d recovered from the chloroform.

Steve even took the time to inform me that go-gettiveness wasn’t a real word. What a pro!

  • 11 Duke // Aug 19, 2008 at 3:34 pm

ok, Chris is funny. updates the entry with a funny text. i wonder if he manages to read these comments at the same time - that would be pro.

  • 12 Cpt. Falcon // Aug 19, 2008 at 3:37 pm

hmm, well I’m going to do everyone the liberty of turning this blog post into a joint discussion of chris’s futile attempts to make money in any way other than google ads, and about the new tf2 blog update.
Now, when I first saw all the alpine textures i thought cool, forest and rocks. and then I read the description for the map arena lumberyard. it’s unsymetrical. one team starts at the top of the hill, one team starts at the bottom, and it plateaus in the middle, i’m guessing.
The higher ground is usually the better ground when it comes to warfare, so it seems to me one team will have an inherent advantage.
it’s bad enough in 2fort that the red team’s battlement’s are cast in shadow, allowing snipers to easily have a place to hide from opposing snipers. Well was a good map, because even though it was boringly symetrical, no side had the advantage.

but maybe the team that starts at the bottom of the hill has advantages to balance it, maybe there’s a forest and they will be protected by treetops. maybe the top of the hill is bare and little cover is provided.
but we’ll have to wait until we see the level.

anyone else think this new unsymmetrical level is a bit risky?

  • 13 303 // Aug 19, 2008 at 3:37 pm

Hehe, the Heavy update is out. That’s why Steam is slow.

    :)

  • 14 Duke // Aug 19, 2008 at 3:41 pm

Cpt. Falcon, weird, i get the impression that map has a lot of high ground battlements and low ground battlements, but nothing about teams starting it differently.

Anyway, that would matter less in a sudden death scenario. you pretty much don’t depend from your respawn room when you don’t respawn.

ok, Chris. I think you’re lying to us. I think you just lost connection. Either that, or you’re just copypasting comments that you prepared long time ago.

  • 20 Newt Pulsifer // Aug 19, 2008 at 3:54 pm

    Spy’s sappin’ ma voice!

  • 21 Smurfy // Aug 19, 2008 at 3:56 pm

  • 22 Ledundead // Aug 19, 2008 at 3:57 pm

Jeez, this is like listening to Frohman get an interview…Oh.

  • 28 Nate // Aug 19, 2008 at 4:02 pm

I mean GameCube. Er, Wii. Um, I think Xbox has TF2 on it.

  • 29 Artix // Aug 19, 2008 at 4:02 pm

Would they believe the Super Nintendo? Or is that too old.

  • 30 Dexemplu // Aug 19, 2008 at 4:05 pm

    PONG!!!!!

  • 31 Ledundead // Aug 19, 2008 at 4:05 pm

TF2 on the 360. It’s the same, but they never updated it.

NOOOO THE INTEVIEW WAS A LIE!

  • 36 This Guy // Aug 19, 2008 at 4:11 pm

    + ooo TF2 patch?

  • 37 Ledundead // Aug 19, 2008 at 4:13 pm

Forget you and your update PC TF2. Us 360 fans are doomed to Dustbowl, 2Fort, Gravel Pit, Hydro, Well, Skywalking, Through gate shooting, and other lameness. Even without all of those updates, it’s still the best multiplayer game on the 360.

  • 38 Dexemplu // Aug 19, 2008 at 4:14 pm

    Dick

  • 39 Artix // Aug 19, 2008 at 4:18 pm

He already has the sammich? I can’t even join a server from so many people.

  • 40 Unconcerned Sam // Aug 19, 2008 at 4:19 pm

    @Ledundead
Well unlike a lot of console games today, the game was actually complete before they released it, and didn’t expect us to be unpaided beta testers.

  • 41 rammingspeed42 // Aug 19, 2008 at 4:29 pm

You ruin our Steam friendship, and then you lie to me?

I don’t know if I can read this blog anymore….

  • 42 Sam // Aug 19, 2008 at 4:41 pm

    LOL
This makes up for not liveblogging it.
Also I’ve already farmed the achievements and got the weapons!
KGB is gonna get sooooooo nerfed and Natascha chews up alot less ammo.

  • 43 rammingspeed42 // Aug 19, 2008 at 5:02 pm

Man, I suck at Arena, and all the non-Arena servers are glorified achievement servers and/or heavy farms.

    IT IS TEH SUCK

  • 44 Terin // Aug 19, 2008 at 5:03 pm

Did you say you quit smoking? SHAME ON YOU. D:<

  • 45 Aaron // Aug 19, 2008 at 10:14 pm

Don’t smoke! I thought you said in the concerned notes you we’re in the progess of quitting :(

  • 46 DaWife // Aug 20, 2008 at 2:24 pm

To clarify - I would never listen to Sheena Easton. Yes, I do happen to know all the words to “Morning Train” but this is only because you couldn’t hide from it in 1981 - it was playing everywhere!

Also, you look cool when you smoke. Everyone knows that.
