Rock On

May 12th, 2008 · 39 Comments · TF2 Maps

My friend Joe over at Massive Crits has a great post about the player-remade map of Rock.

Unlike Joe, I had the chance to play a couple rounds on Rock recently. Small matches, all basically Scout rushes and one Heavy camping the warden’s office, but it was enough to see the map work beautifully. It’s a great recreation, down to the last detail, and brought back a lot of memories of playing it back in the old TFC days.

Joe also has a lot to say about bringing back the Demoman’s detpack. While it feels to me, lately, that the Demoman is a bit overpowered, I agree with Joe — it would be a great addition to the Demo’s arsenal and I’d love to see it return, perhaps as a Milestone 3 weapon for the Demoman’s achievements.  Being able to open pathways — and being able to reclose them, especially — was a big strategical element of maps like Rock and Warpath, and it would be great to reintroduce that.

I never played TFC, so I know not much of this “Detpack” contrivance.

Though from what I’ve heard, it doesn’t seem similar enough to stickies or grenades to substitute for them.

The detpack is similar to the bomb in Counter-Strike. It takes some time to set, during which the demoman needs to be undisturbed. It has a timer so it doesn’t blow up right away. And you only get one per life. And they can be defused by the enemy team (the Scout in TFC).

So, you won’t be running around chucking huge bombs in windows at will, you’ll have to carefully place and set them and get out before they blow.

Ah right, thanks. Kind of hard to see how it would fit in TF2, I can’t think of an objective that would need to be destroyed after a set time like that.

Although the image of a Demoman proudly swigging from his bottle as the pack detonates sending a ton of rock down on an approaching enemy force is a happy one :-)

Rock had a passageway that could be demo’d open, leading into the opposing team’s yard. It could also be re-demo’d closed. It was a big back-and-forth strategic control point on that map. Same with the underground tunnels of Warpath.

There was also an underwater tunnel on the old Well map (and the remade Well Classic) that could only be opened by the Demoman.

Warpath had 2 places a detpack could open, right? I remember them as being tunnels underneath the middle point, leading as an alternate route to the rest of each base.

Though, seeing as how they completely revamped the warpath map, I don’t think a detpack would have any real use for it unless they retrofitted a place for one in it.

Der, just saw you mention Warpath in your post just now.

  • 7 Christopher // May 12, 2008 at 11:07 am

The new Warpath has destructible entrances underground, yeah, near the second points. Right now anyone can open them — even a determined Scout with a bat — but they can’t be reclosed.

A map-changing feature, only available to a small percentage, though? Not good.

  • 9 Matt // May 12, 2008 at 6:24 pm

Only a one version of Warpath for TF2 that I know of has the destructible entrances. And I rarely see that version played. I tend to see the betas played instead of “final.”

  • 10 Dan // May 12, 2008 at 8:52 pm

EVERY version of Warpath I’ve played has the destructible entrances, including the betas.

  • 13 Jonah // May 14, 2008 at 5:58 am

  • 14 Pixi // May 14, 2008 at 10:14 am

Isn’t it about time we see that comic ?!?!?!?

  • 15 Mr brit // May 14, 2008 at 12:34 pm

Just what I was going to say! A may release was it?

    Definately looking forward to it!

  • 16 Joe // May 14, 2008 at 3:36 pm

Mike: the drtpack was also used for other things too, like being a dick and dropping one in front of the spawn gate in dustbowl, set to go off two seconds after the gate opened. It was also a good way to take care of incoming groups in 2fort, setting one inside the entrance. Also, scouts could defuse it.

My idea was to have it as an achievement, along the lines of the ubersaw, cool to have, not necessary but something cool to earn.

    LURN2PROOFREAD

    drtpack? detpack.

  • 18 Matt // May 15, 2008 at 1:36 pm

Detpack as the final achievement reward for Demos would be awesome. So, it’ll hopefully be out when Valve releases the Demo’s achievements in 2013.

Did Chris disappear because he can’t be arsed to do the comic?

  • 20 Sam // May 16, 2008 at 12:55 pm

He’s scared of all of you shouting at him.

  • 21 Sacrifist // May 16, 2008 at 3:39 pm

To Matt..cp_warpath_final is nowhere near the final version. In fact, some asshat decompiled the cp_warpath version and added all the junk to the his version and called it final (without the cp_warpath’s authors permission). cp_warpath 2 is currently the final version of warpath for TF2.

Wow, Christopher what’s up? It’s been like 5 days without a post! You’re one of the most prolific people on the interwebz, don’t ruin that reputation!

    /joke.

But seriously, it would be awesome if you didn’t post for like 2 weeks then came out with the first issue of the comic just when we weren’t expecting it.

    Maybe that’s the plan >_>

    I hope you’re alright btw.

  • 23 Pixi // May 18, 2008 at 3:22 am

This delay on a post .. I better be because you are working on the damn comic.

  • 24 The Paranoid Android // May 18, 2008 at 3:29 am

He didn’t say THIS May, did he?

  • 25 Anon // May 18, 2008 at 8:07 am

Or he just decided that we’re a bunch of gits he doesn’t wanna deal with anymore.

  • 26 Rev. Name Withheld // May 18, 2008 at 10:22 am

Obvious answer: Chris is running on Valve Time.

  • 27 Mr_Wizard // May 18, 2008 at 1:51 pm

I really hopes he continues the blogs. I like his comics, but I find his writing entertaining enough that I am already missing this blog, despite it not really existing for all that long. :-\

  • 28 Tales // May 19, 2008 at 2:07 am

I’ma go read Concerned to fill the time…

  • 29 Punjabi Fury // May 19, 2008 at 2:08 am

Whoops, forgot I went by that other username on this comp.

  • 30 Tomical // May 19, 2008 at 4:48 am

I agree, I love Chris’ writing. I think I enjoyed Concerned more for the fantastic writing then the visuals, so I was excited when he started this blog.
Speaking of Concerned, did anyone see Gordon Froman (okay, Male_07) in the latest Zero Punctuation?

  • 31 Gothic // May 19, 2008 at 6:10 am

“Obvious answer: Chris is running on Valve Time.”

Yea. His next blog post should be out when Duke Nukem Forever goes gold.

  • 32 Gothic // May 19, 2008 at 7:22 am

You know you’re addicted to Chris’ blogging when you check back every 5 minutes even when you have a pile of work waiting for you to finish up.

  • 37 Sam // May 19, 2008 at 2:00 pm

“Speaking of Concerned, did anyone see Gordon Froman (okay, Male_07) in the latest Zero Punctuation?”

I’m surprised he didn’t say it was gordon frohman, instead of random HL2 character, he likes Concerned a lot doesn’t he?

  • 38 Soup Nazi // May 19, 2008 at 5:44 pm

I feel like a total jackass for not bringing this up until now, but does anyone know of any said scouts with bats destroying the paths(warpaths if you will) on Warpath? I would literally pay to see that.

  • 39 The Paranoid Android // May 20, 2008 at 6:47 am

Could somebody check that he hasn’t locked himself in the bathroom?
