Portal Pack

May 7th, 2008 · 19 Comments · Gaming

If you enjoyed the 2D Flash version of Portal, and believe me, you did, you might be interested to know that the people behind it, We Create Stuff, have created (or more accurately, recreated) those levels for the actual 3D Portal game.

I haven’t tried them yet so I can’t say how good they are, but if you’re looking for some new Portal puzzles, this pack has over 40 maps, good for several hours of playtime.  And all for the low, low price of clicking something.

    Its a excelllent map pack. It reuses some old ideas, and throws new ones in a perfect mix. The opening in the very first room is simple but it has an idea that blows your mind. you just dont expect something in the other end. Its not much, its a bloody brilliant idea that just screams great costum map pack!

    Lots of stuff moving and i Loooved they added a replica of the very first Portal trailer. Play it play it play it!!!

    I’d love too take a look at them, but apparently Firefox has decided that wecreatestuff.com is an evil lying bastard, and has responded by not letting me connect to it. :(
    Oh well. There’s always internet explorer.

    Nope, that didn’t work either.

    Man, I suck at installing bonus maps. I mean, I got the maps in, and it’s certainly playable, at least to the point I’m at. But the custom models and custom textures? Big red error and pink checkboards, respectively. I don’t want to get much farther, in fear that I might get to the boss or something, and I get attacked by an ‘Error’ shooting ‘Errors’ at me. That would be pure suck.

    So… where should I put, say, the ‘Materials’ folder? Or, should I be taking out the individual pieces? Any help would be much appreciated. :)

    Played it. Really like it. Kinda stuck on it. I have to launch myself over this glass wall onto a small platform then from this platform over the electrified area and through the door.
    This may take some time…

    @Mashakosha
    That was a difficult one. I made a hole (how do you explain this :P)…

    Ok, make a hole on the platform, get back to base. make a hole in the eh, hole? (Paradox!) Wait for the moment right before the sound stops. Jump in, crunch and push yourself in the right direction. Thats the way at least I did it. Its most likely a more easy way to do it.

    @The Linker
    You need to have both HL2 and Portal for this mappack, got ‘em?

  • 12 The Linker // May 7, 2008 at 4:53 pm

    Yes yes, definitely. I’ve gotten all the way to the… well, I don’t want to spoil it for those who have not played it, but it’s something that was featured in HL2: Ep. 2. Mind you, I only know this from exploring the materials folder and viewing the JPG map. It’s just a tiny ‘Error’ in-game. That’s when I decided I couldn’t go on any longer without seeing the cool custom models and details and what-not.

    I’m stuck at the section where there are two buttons under a set of lasers that you can jump right over. On the left, there is a forcefield to another room with a cube dispenser. It dropped one, but there are two cubes jammed in the top of it. I see the red arrow pointing to a grate up in the dispening tube, but I can’t get very close to it even with portal jumps. Any tips?

    I completed it.

    A lot of the maps were neat. A lot of them also translated fairly poorly to 3D, especially ones that involved electrical floors. Near the end, I was disappointed that taking out sentries relied more on brute force and bumrushing than any finesse, and there were a lot of areas that were frustrating simply because the level design was restrictive. I felt it lacked polish, in that there needed to be more playtesting and a better focus on puzzles instead of standard FPS reflex-based elements.

    I downloaded this and started playing as soon as I saw it as a download over on hl2files.com. It’s fairly fun, but some of the tricks are decidedly rough around the edges. It’s still a lot of fun.

    … HOLY CRAP ON A KRINGLE!

    I think I liked the new addons to Portal, (I.E. the surfaces portals could go through but you couldn’t, and the electric floors.) The end is awesome, and I hope Valve takes this into consideration for it’s storyline.

    I played this pack. Took me over 3 hours, longer than the original game! Great design, integration, and even a minimalist plot! Clever and fulfilling.

    I’ve just been having issues trying to install the dang thing, period. Can anyone give me some guidance here? I can’t be *that* technologically inept…
