Tom Francis should really have his own category on this blog, I link to his talented limey ass so much. And hey, it’s my blog, so I think I’ll give him one.
If you were a fan of the journal he kept while playing the longest possible game of Galactic Civilizations 2, then feel free to do a happy little jig, because he’s got more in store. PC Gamer UK will be publishing a book of his new journal, in which he plays the GalCiv2 expansion, Twilight of the Arnor. This time, he’ll be journaling an even bigger game with the self-imposed mission of attempting to bring peace to the troubled galaxy.
The book will be bundled for free with the next issue of PC Gamer UK, and later published online in installments. But try to pick it up in hardcopy, willya — if they sell enough on newsstands, maybe they’ll do more.

Ooh, I’m looking forward to this - the GalCiv diary was fantastic.

YES! I have no idea what kind of supernatural being was eavesdropping on my thoughts, but this is 100% AWESOME. I loved his writing on that blog, and still have it bookmarked. I’ve gotta preorder the hardcopy from amazon.

Almost as good as the imminent announcement of concerned 2, right?

Trying to get a job with Future Publishing/CVG now? :P
Can’t wait for my copy of PCG to arrive :)
P.S. Yours is PCG US, ours is PCG. THE PROOF IS IN THE STEAM COMMUNITIES ;)
I had better go join the pointless Wikipedia argument about which gets prominence in the article…

I just gave that a read. You know, even though he admits to not having knowledge of political/military conniving, I think he really had a good understanding of sci-fi diplomacy that went beyond the whole “we go here, have an epic battle, and laugh at the end of the episode.” He had more of the babylon 5 “Buy, sell, trade, infringe on territory, declare war, destroy your homeworld at the end of the season” understanding of it, which made reading it almost like reading a good science fiction book.

Well, I am very excited. Any news on whether he will still be playing as space rodents?
9 Icks // Aug 21, 2008 at 3:52 pm
@8 Yes, yes he will. At least, according to the cover. Here’s the link to the picture:

I am absolutely amazed at the GalCiv diary. The fact that GalCiv has this sort of AI both scares me and arouses me in ways I never thought possible.
And now I have a craving to play GalCiv 2.
Ah well, it’ll keep me amused during the TF2 Noob Weekend. (See what I did there?)

Ack; I only bought PCG last month so I’d have something to read on the train, but this? More Tom-Francis-with-GalCiv? Sounds ace and I’m in.
Any chance of a by-committee game of GalCiv now?

I predict legions of Spore blogs.

wowbagger, I agree about PCG being British, published 1 year earlier than US. Looking forward to my hand-delivered (sort of) copy!

Dammit - I gotta try and get a copy of this. Annoyingly enough, I don’t get PCGamer UK - seeing as how I don’t live IN the UK.

mwa ha ha!! Yet again the UK wins!

Speaking of journals and blogs, don’t you have an Oblivion one to be tending to?

news is boring! I want wild speculation on what update is next! The face behind the pyro mask! The rising price of fuel! The league of gentlemen maybe doing a fourth series! Something that isn’t a glorified link!!!

@Mr. Brit:
I’d be content with reflection on this update.
Here’s my view after getting all unlocks and playing (almost?) all new maps.
Achievements: The best so far between the pyro and medic pack. They aren’t too far fetched, yet are still difficult. The baseline is play as the Heavy and do your part, and you’ll get achievements. We’re finally being rewarded on what we’re supposed to do.
Sandvich: At first it seemed to completely replace the shotgun, but after a while you’ll wish you had a ranged weapon to switch to and fire off shots quickly instead of spinning up and slowing down.
It’s very useful, and even humorous. the perfect unlock. (It’s funny to see all the skins for it on FPSB. Stuff like turkey on rye, grilled cheese, and even a pizza.)
Natascha: :( Doomed to share the same fate as the kritzkrieg, can be really useful in certain situations, but no match for the regular minigun, and in desperate need of a buff.
My idea for a buff: 300-400 max ammo, a simple buff.
A more complex buff might be faster spin up or even over-all faster movement speed, maybe because this gun’s lighter than Sascha.
KGB: omg fun. It’s also a fair alternate, more difficult to get kills, but when you get that first kill the others just roll out.
One thing: as far as I know, the heavy’s melee does the same amount of damage as the soldier’s, pyro’s, demo’s, and a few others. The scout and spy each have their own melee strength category, and the rest all do the same damage.
I think each class’s melee should do significantly different damage, with the heavy’s being the most (besides the spy’s backstab). I’m not saying the heavy’s punches are weak, i’m just saying they should be more powerful than a bottle or a shovel.
Badwater Basin (new payload map): 20x better than goldrush, which isn’t really saying much. It’s not a great heavy level because of all the wide open spaces, so that probably made me like it less because I just wanted to play heavy.
It’s really not a bad map and i’ll grow to like it in time.
Arena mode: eh. For those who like tf2 AND css, this is perfect for you. For those who used to like css but gave it up for tf2, you’d probably still like this.
For all the me’s out there who used to like css because it was the only online game I had and joyfully gave it up for tf2, never to play it again (except once but I quit after one round, cursing various weapon-whores), mmmm this probably isn’t for you. i’ll stick to cp_well and badlands. love them cp levels.
It’s kinda fun to play every now and then, but i’m so used to respawning now i cant get back in the habit of fearing for my only life. I admit, i’m dispensable cannonfodder. quantity over quality.
as a final note, the maps looked beautiful, and i had a lot of time to check the scenery out as I flew around in my ethereal nature watching form.
One thing i’d like to suggest to valve. If they’re going to stick with this arena mode, i recommend they put something into spectating.
i thought it would be really cool if you actually became a ghost, visible to other spectators with 50% opacity or less.
you’d be the character model you died as (or if you start out spectating, maybe you’d be the character you have the most hours as, except this wouldn’t add to play time) and you could walk around and spectate from a more in depth view.
It always seems so lonely when you’re dead, it makes you forget they’res 15 other invisible ghosts flying all over the place.
this would also give spectators something to do, because atleast half of them will converge in one area and taunt repeatedly. they can even shoot eachother for fun, even though they’re already dead and their bullets won’t touch anyone who’s still alive.
i just think that would be a load of fun.

Mr. Brit, I doubt Chris knows who the league of gentlemen are.

My PCG came today mysteriously enough. I’ve been reading Plan B and it’s really good. The actual ‘Plan B’ is rather humourous and I won’t spoil it for you.
There’s even a chapter called “Spies sappin’ my gentry”. Wow.

W00T for English PCG I do pity the americans for the little scrappy add infested thing that the american version is. But then they dont have the genius of Tom and there other geni. Also never said before TY for concerned and living in Oblivion the best webcomics ever!
