“…one of the most toxic places on earth.”

October 6th, 2008 · 36 Comments · Uncategorized

Were standing on the ‘bridge of death’ here. So called because on the day of the explosion, people gathered on this bridge to see the beautiful rainbow coloured flames of the burning graphite nuclear core, whose flames were higher than the smoke stack itself. They were all exposed to levels of over 500 roentgens, a fatal dose.

While I never got S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky to run properly, at least I can look at these amazing and haunting pictures from a tour of the abandoned city of Pripyat and the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.

50,000 people used to live here…

    Another great site about Chernobyl

Chilling. I don’t think there are many other words for it. Just chilling. If it weren’t for the radiation, it would be very interesting to explore that place.

    “… now it’s a ghost town.”

strange how real life pictures of this scenery makes you immerse even deeper into a game based on it, be it CoD4’s sniper mission or stalker

  • 7 trapped // Oct 6, 2008 at 12:33 pm

Chernobyl just gives me the willies, I’ve always wanted to visit there one day.

    @ 4 -

Damn. I was gonna link that site.

  • 9 Polter // Oct 6, 2008 at 12:57 pm

    That’s sad. :/

  • 10 [VGN] Chronos[Ha-G] // Oct 6, 2008 at 1:02 pm

Btw - on the subject of STALKER. They put a patch out recently. It FUBAR’ed all my saves, but the game suddenly runs much smoother than before. I wonder if it would run now for you, Chris?

  • 11 Kollega // Oct 6, 2008 at 1:05 pm

Hi Chris! About the whole Pripyat thing, some wildlife(fish for example)is growing huge over there. But it’s not caused by radiation. Just humankind do not tries to mess it all up.And thanks for updating 1blog and LiO.

  • 12 Kollega // Oct 6, 2008 at 1:10 pm

And oh,some trivia. Hotel exploded by attack helicopter rockets in CoD4 in reality now renovated and used by tourists who wisit Pripyat and it’s surroundings.

  • 13 Kollega // Oct 6, 2008 at 1:16 pm

Hmm… Strange. I thought hotel you visit in CoD4 is renovated, but it isn’t… Most likely i misunderstood one journal or something.

  • 14 Christopher // Oct 6, 2008 at 1:17 pm

Yeah, I tried it with the patch the other day, and it still won’t go.

  • 15 Niteowl // Oct 6, 2008 at 1:51 pm

BLAH BLAH tremendous tragedy BLAH BLAH untold suffering of hundreds of thousands BLAH BLAH cancerous lesions in surprising places BLAH BLAH birth defects that are abominations to god.

At least they got a reportedly good game out of it that won’t work on anyone’s PC not powered by the heart of a stallion slaughtered in it’s prime and ROCKET FUEL.

Win-win, I think they call it.

  • 16 Damone // Oct 6, 2008 at 1:53 pm

    Geez man, For clear sky the only few things i had to do was;

    Install Clear Sky.
Download the latest patch just because i want it up to date.

And well, I have no problems whatso-ever. Then again, i got retail. Might have something to do with that. How? I have no clue.

  • 17 Rovlad // Oct 6, 2008 at 2:09 pm

    Um, it’s radioactive, not toxic?

  • 18 Rovlad // Oct 6, 2008 at 2:12 pm

@16: It doesn’t have anything to do with it (of course). Tell you what, have you tried your hand at lottery or casino lately? You probably should.

  • 19 Roadrunner // Oct 6, 2008 at 2:32 pm

But is it actually a good game worth buying?
I read it’s as buggy as hell :|

  • 20 Roadrunner // Oct 6, 2008 at 2:32 pm

^^ OH crap, to my post above, I thought people were talking about the game xD

  • 21 AlphaHawk // Oct 6, 2008 at 3:36 pm

The game is too fucking deep for Chris to play, I would think his last blog on it made that clear.

    :D

  • 22 Ronin08 // Oct 6, 2008 at 3:52 pm

Wow, I recognize a few of those buildings from CoD 4–and that pool at the end…you see dogs eating a guy in there! How insane is that?!

Also, to the comments about the hotel–remember, in CoD 4, you’re there in the 70’s, not the modern day..big time difference.

  • 23 max // Oct 6, 2008 at 4:49 pm

I want to go there soo much

  • 24 Blackout62 // Oct 6, 2008 at 5:15 pm

speaking of COD 4 anyone see the hotel felt the need to say “hey, I killed a guy there” lol, good times.

  • 25 The Pants Were Dead // Oct 6, 2008 at 5:20 pm

Bad taste, Niteowl. Bordering on the absurd.

    You were so close Chris…

And after all that anticipation for a new post, you give me two!
One about a game I don’t care about, and the the other about a game neither of us have ever played!!
Post something about how the pyro is often wrongly accused of being the noob class, only because most play the pyro improperly. Or how the first two updates stuck and people still play as them, but the Heavy still remains underplayed, despite it being the most balanced of the updates.
Post that how a lot of people want the demoman nerfed will just cut him down, that the best way to nerf the demoman is to disable him detonating his stickies in midair, so that the bombs have to stick to a surface (and maybe wait a second) for them to be able to explode.
Post about who the obvious best character is in any of the Smash Brothers games, and that anyone who disagrees can say it to his masked yet still handsome falcon face.
Post about how the words “opinion” and “fact” are actually interchangeable, if you have the falcon balls to back it.

    :)

Hey Chris check out the gameplay stats!

goldrush is basically going more and more red

  • 30 Dave // Oct 6, 2008 at 7:47 pm

If you’ve got the time, I’d love to see review of the big box of mods steam just gave me.

  • 31 Kollega // Oct 6, 2008 at 9:41 pm

@15:What Pants and Lord said.Really bad taste.
@22:when i said it i meant that hotel renowated in real life, but it must be some other, because one you visit in CoD4 is destoyed just like everyrthing else in Pripyat. And in Call of Duty 4 it’s 90’s,not 70’s because Chernobyl power plant blew up in 1986,and Price says it was “decade later”.Thus Pripyat mission going on in 1996,and most of CoD4 action happening in 2011(?).

Achievement unlocked-Ubernerd:Figure out facts nobody really cares about.

Is is a bad thing that I cant tell the chair in the picture apart from the one in HL2?

  • 33 Killa-Ewok // Oct 7, 2008 at 5:32 am

    @32
You can’t guess where VALVe took their models from?

  • 34 Lack_26 // Oct 7, 2008 at 7:46 am

I should be going there next year, the area has been a ‘morbid’ fascination for me longer than I can remember.

But it still makes me sad to see what happened to many of the people there, but then again, there is the stories of those who stayed behind, and lived.
