My Steam Account Was Just Hijacked

July 31st, 2008 · 179 Comments · Blather

UPDATE 1046AM PST:  GOT MY ACCOUNT BACK.

UPDATE: Haven’t gotten my account back, but it doesn’t appear to have been online since the incident. Also, it appears the account used to send me the message had also been hijacked. The phishing page I got suckered by was flagged by Firefox this morning, and now appears to be gone.

My Steam account just got hijacked. Someone I had friended sent me a link to a steam group, and I foolishly didn’t inspect the URL before clicking it. It looked like a Steam page, so I stupidly logged in. Whammo.

So, it may appear I am online tonight but I’m not. IF YOU ARE ON MY FRIENDS LIST AND I SEND YOU A MESSAGE, IT IS NOT ME. DO NOT CLICK ANY LINK I APPEAR TO SEND YOU. IT IS NOT ME. It’s the fucking asshole who stole my account and who I’m going to fucking track down and beat with a fucking firehose.

I’m tired of this shit. It’s bad enough someone spammed all my friends to join a Gordon Frohman fan club, but now this crap happens. When I get my account back I’m defriending anyone I don’t know personally, and then I’m moving into a cave.

EDIT: Valve is on the case. I knew spending 18 months doing a HL2 comic would come in handy.

EDIT 2: I would like to change my weapon of choice from a firehose to a splintery piano leg.

EDIT 3: I have been informed a Rocket-Propelled Chainsaw is the way to go. I concur.

This is the asshole who did it: EDIT 4: It looks like the superjazeero is not actually to blame. Apparently, his account was hijacked too, and the hijacker used it to send this message:

That blows. I hope you get it back!

You should contact steam support, I’m sure they’ll be able to help you get your account back.

  • 3 Gryphon // Jul 31, 2008 at 5:41 pm

That sucks so much. I really hope you get your account back. I’m sure many of us would donate money to re-purchase your games (if you end up getting a new account).

  • 4 CitrusFreak // Jul 31, 2008 at 5:44 pm

I doubt very much that the retrieval of your account will be anything but speedy, Gordon. You’ve got connections!

  • 5 Miniman // Jul 31, 2008 at 5:49 pm

I recently got sent a link to a site that looked exactly like the Steam Community site, luckily Firefox detected it as Web Forgery.

  • 6 Starveling // Jul 31, 2008 at 5:50 pm

Noooo don’t go live in a cave!
The best thing about you was that you were out in the open and available to talk to and not like some social recluse!

I’d report that website to that webhost “BlackAppleHost” but you can’t access the Privacy policy, terms of usage, or the “contact us” page.

    Double bogus?

  • 9 Sinoda // Jul 31, 2008 at 5:56 pm

Dude..That sucks. I wish there was something we could do.. If you lost the account, I’d try to donate so you could get new games…But lack a paypal account. I doubt there is, but post/email me (or whatever) if there IS something we can do! Anyways, I really hope you get the account back.

  • 10 Alexander // Jul 31, 2008 at 5:57 pm

Woah. I actually stopped breathing for half a second there. I thought it was going to be something about stopping the blog or something. Sheesh.

Like CitrusFreak said, you got friends in high places, the worst they’ll do is spam your friends with stuff, and if they really care, they ought to know it’s not you (and/or will check your blog about it)

  • 11 jordan // Jul 31, 2008 at 5:58 pm

tthere is something you can do. do you have a gun?

  • 12 jordan // Jul 31, 2008 at 5:59 pm

  • 13 Stranger // Jul 31, 2008 at 6:00 pm

I also wish I’d seen this a little sooner — I was a member of the “Gordon Frohman Fanclub” for about 5 minutes.

You can contact Steam Support for that stuff.

  • 15 Gemmy // Jul 31, 2008 at 6:07 pm

I just reported the fake steam site as a phishing site to every blacklist I know, so hopefully that will help others at least.

I think the whole of blackapplehost.com is a trap, to be honest. The Whois for blackapplehost.com is some random guy in Malaysia, with a gmail account, not a real business. It’s also a domain registered through “namecheap.com”, which doesn’t inspire confidence…

  • 16 Cynicalcheeto // Jul 31, 2008 at 6:10 pm

I’m so sorry, Chris. Here, take my credit card and have fun.

  • 17 Nate // Jul 31, 2008 at 6:13 pm

If the grunts at Steam support don’t help, I’m sure you could call up Gabe and he’d personally go over to the guys house with his crowbar.

This sounds like it’s time to unleash the collective wrath of the internet.

People of Team Fortress 2, find this person and tell him that you don’t like his actions. Tell him to relinquish the stolen data and leave before this gets out of hand.

Do this as often as possible, and viytory will be ours!

    /add
You can of course just plainly annoy the crap out of him. Either way victory is ours!

You do realize that some douches who read this blog are all gonna change their Steam name to [MeFi] Frohman, thus making the search harder.

  • 22 Da Gamer // Jul 31, 2008 at 6:21 pm

Crap! sry for the double-post. This is the reason I have “Standards” for adding friends, i only add them if:
    1. They can voicechat
    2. I played with them and deemed them worthy of my “frienditudeship”
    otherwise, no dice.

Yep, right there under friends, “Gordon Frohman”. Along with a ton of people all rated 10. NOT SUSPICIOUS AT ALL

  • 30 friccish // Jul 31, 2008 at 6:39 pm

    Noooooooooooooo!

I love seeing Frohman in my friends list. How do we get into this exclusive “anyone you know personally” club?

  • 31 Nyarlathotep // Jul 31, 2008 at 6:46 pm

    I know Chris personally.

He joined a server I was playing on once. I said “Are you the guy who does the comic?” and I don’t think he read it because he didn’t respond. Then a little while later he disconnected from the server.

It was still really cool though.

  • 32 Assassinador // Jul 31, 2008 at 6:54 pm

That’s one of the reasons for me to only have 2 friends in my list, one of them being my cousin :D
Another reason is that I’m just anti-social.

  • 33 Stranger // Jul 31, 2008 at 6:55 pm

NOOOOOO!!! But… I just added you a week or so ago! Don’t defriend PsychoDuck21! I’m cool!

Anyways, it seems like Valve is working on this pretty hard. I wouldn’t worry too much about not getting it back. Still, pain in the ass that this happened.

    The Duck Has Spoken.

  • 35 CitrusFreak // Jul 31, 2008 at 6:57 pm

I suddenly feel like a celebrity by proxy now. Thanks Gordon!

  • 36 PsychoDuck // Jul 31, 2008 at 7:02 pm

I just took a quick look, and… It doesn’t seem like he did much, if anything to your account. All the links are there, and he isn’t even online. What was the point of all that?

Or, maybe Valve has restored it to last default or something, and you’re about to get the message of truth! That’d be awesome, but somewhat unlikely. Oh well.

    The Duck Has Spoken.

  • 37 Frosty // Jul 31, 2008 at 7:14 pm

Ooh, I can hook you up with a pretty good sized group of people that would love to beat the shit outta this guy. The only problem is that we need to find enough pianos…

But seriously dude, that really really sucks. I just hope Valve fixes this soon and you can resume kickin’ ass in TF2. =D

  • 40 Prospero // Jul 31, 2008 at 7:28 pm

My condolences, good luck getting it back, and painful vengeance to the one who hijacked it.

  • 41 S-Guy // Jul 31, 2008 at 7:41 pm

Aww, don’t live in a cave! There are so many downsides, like the smell, the lack of light, the bears…besides, at least Valve knows you from Concerned. Most of us don’t have that kind of
    luck.

And a quick request: when you get around to hitting him with that splintery piano leg, hit him once for every person that comments here!

  • 42 Tiler // Jul 31, 2008 at 7:48 pm

I used to tell popular people to ’suck up’ when they complained about being a celebrity.

But thanks to seeing stuff like this, and having a few run in with some rather annoying/creepy people, I’ve pretty much changed my mind on the subject.

Considering Valve steals your ideas to ruin their games, I’m sure they’ll get your account back soon. Good luck on that cave business, though.

  • 43 LM // Jul 31, 2008 at 8:02 pm

So lemme get this straight. You accept a friend request from someone you apparently don’t know at all in any capacity, online or offline (A). They immediately send you a single badly-spelled missive (B) that spectacularly fails to indicate that they know you in any capacity (C), followed by logging off without waiting for a response (D). Said missive includes a link (E), its destination completely un-obscured and handily bolded for extra readability, which you proceed to click on, its text apparently failing to register in your visual field. Despite already being logged into Steam, the destination web site presents the appearance that you are in fact logged out (F). Undeterred by the half-dozen suspicious cues you have encountered thus far, and not bothering to perform a cursory inspection to discover the perfectly legible text “Free Hosting by BlackAppleHost.com” at the bottom of the page (G), you attempt to log in and (predictably, at this point) get your password snarfed.

While I should mention that no personal disrespect towards you is intended and I have the utmost respect for your work, I think you need to take a close look at what happened here. Any two or three of the above-marked items, in combination, should have been enough to arouse your suspicions. Here we are dealing with *seven* different indicators that some shenanigans may be going on, and this rather inept scammer still scored a hit off you. Be happy this wake-up call was something as inconsequential as your Steam account… and not, say, your bank account, in which case the consequences would have been more far-reaching and less immediately obvious.

  • 48 Christopher // Jul 31, 2008 at 8:12 pm

    LM:

I get friend requests all the time from people who know me through the comic. I get invited to groups all the time by people who know me through the comic. These people are strangers, but they know me from my websites, and I friend them because they are fans and I always check out the groups they’ve started to see if I might want to join.

These invitations are often “badly-spelled”. Poor spelling is not an indicator of anything but being on the internet.

These items do not raise alarms for me after a couple years.

No shit. I was dumb. I didn’t really look at the page I was logging in to. Obviously, I’m a fucking idiot. But thanks for pointing out how much of a fucking idiot I am.

  • 54 Terin // Jul 31, 2008 at 8:33 pm

Ah, yeah. The same thing happened to me just before the pyro update. Except it was one of my friend’s who had their account hijacked. Getting in contact with Valve immediately is the best thing to do. It should be resolved pretty quickly. It sucks, but hey, now you’ll be more the wiser about it all.

  • 56 Boojangels // Jul 31, 2008 at 8:50 pm

I doubt superjazeroo himself sent you that fake link. I bet his account got hacked and he’s sending it to everyone on his friend’s list. I had a buddy on my friend’s list for a long time and he sent me a link like that. I noticed that the link ended in .tk so I didn’t put my stuff in.

You’ll get your account back, trust me. Don’t sweat it.

  • 57 LM // Jul 31, 2008 at 8:54 pm

Please feel free to remove my earlier comment if you thought it was out of line. I myself was uncertain whether or not to post it, but I felt that in the end it would be more informative than inflammatory, and would hopefully aid you in avoiding similar situations in the future. I tend to be extremely blunt, even unforgiving, on matters of information security, but if I come across as harsh, it’s only because I’ve seen the damage that can be caused by even the simplest social engineering tactics.

The best thing everyone can do is report it via firefox as a bad site :). Mass reports will get the site flagged.

  • 116 Joe // Aug 1, 2008 at 12:14 am

Yeah, he was pestering me the other day to join his group. He caught me while I was working though, and I kindof ignored him. It also struck me as wierd that he was messaging me to join his group as opposed to just inviting.

I do have some info though, so I may deal with him tomorrow.

If you read all the way down here, you must be in need of some sympathy. I have some to give.

My brother’s account was hijacked (I don’t know how, he didn’t even know the password!). When he had recovered it, he had already been vac banned on CS. It can always be worse.

Well, it appears that you can’t access that site any longer, as it directs you straight to the real steam community site. At least that’s a step in the right direction.

Hope things turn out well for you.

I hope he buys some games for your account before you get it back…

But you’d still have to turn him into rocket fuel with your chainsaw so you can shoot his dismembered bits into the sun.

    You can either

Cut of his genitals and feed them to him.
Throw his head through a television
Beat him to death inside a toilet
    Decapitate him
Give him a present, with a bomb inside
Hide a razor blade in a plate of Spegetti
    Kill his family and friends
    Drive him to suicide.

As you can see, i’ve got alot of free time

  • 128 Azbec // Aug 1, 2008 at 1:54 am

    Shit…That little bastard.
Have you ever considered using a Rocket-Propelled Ornate Axe?

  • 129 Disposable // Aug 1, 2008 at 2:02 am

Let’s find this guy and break every joint in his body - this is easy to do. Simply apply enough force in the direction the joint is not meant to go. To break the elbow, for example, simply straighten his arm, palm up. Hold his wrist with your left hand and hold his elbow in the crook of your right arm. Tighten your right arm and push down with your left hand.

Rinse and repeat for the other joints.

Our thoughts go out to you on this day, Chris. It’s never nice to be reminded that the internet is filled with arse holes as well as genuinely nice chaps.

  • 138 Freaky Mutant Man // Aug 1, 2008 at 4:12 am

Surprising to see that the account used in the hijacking was itself hijacked, and that the real owner ended up posting here. In fact, I bet that the hijacker has no idea at all who he hijacked. If somebody actually goes through with the whole beating-the-utter-crap-out-of-him thing, he’d probably have no idea why the assailant(s) are saying things like “1fort”, “concerned”, and “YOU RUINED OUR CHANCE TO SEE A NEW COMIC BEFORE 2009, JERK”. Not to mention the utter confusion of being beaten with splintery piano legs/rocket chainsaws out of nowhere, but that’s to be expected in that sort of situation.

  • 139 lazerus // Aug 1, 2008 at 4:28 am

that sucks if hes in australia let me know ill kill him with a rocket propelled chainsaw

  • 140 Disposable // Aug 1, 2008 at 4:47 am

I should probably point out that I am not, in fact, a murdering psychopath, I just happened to go to private school so I take a rather dim view of people behaving like shits to other people.

I also know some Ju Jitsu, hence the interesting anatomical lecture. A rocket propelled chainsaw would be more spectacular though, I admit. It’d be over too quickly though- The joy of breaking every joint one by one is he’s in excruciating pain throughout the whole thing, especially if you wake him up every time he faints.

I work in an office, I have a lot of time to think about these things.

  • 141 n00bie51 // Aug 1, 2008 at 5:36 am

I was given some messages to join a group that didn’t exist on Steam. It was quite obvious when more than one friend gave me the exact same copy+pasted message.

  • 157 [@] Chronos[Ha-G] // Aug 1, 2008 at 9:59 am

When I first read what happened, before looking at the picture provided on the post, my heart sank. Earlier on, I sent Chris a link to that Gordon Frohman fan club - not an in-steam link, but an actual web address link, since I couldn’t figure out how to send a Steam address link to him. Essentially, I thought that *I* had somehow accidentally done this to him.

…then I saw the picture, and breathed a sigh of relief. Hope you get your account back soon, man.

(Damn, guess I’m going off the friends list, now)
