Medic Unlockables Now More Unlockable Than Ever

June 23rd, 2008 · 38 Comments · TF2 News

A Steam update has done away with the medic’s burden of having to acquire all the achievements in order to unlock his new gear. Now, the system matches the pyro’s, where the unlocks come at 10, 15, and 20 achievements, which means some of you aspiring medics might find you’ve gotten some fancy new weapons just by joining a server. Mazeltov!

A bit too late there, Valve.
    -.-

“Too late”? What, did you cancel your subscription?

  • 3 Baggie // Jun 23, 2008 at 10:54 pm

maybe valve realised that people are grinding for the gear and want to make it so they don’t have to?

  • 4 PhatMan // Jun 23, 2008 at 10:54 pm

he probably already earned them all.

i think what valve is doing is a good idea, making the unlockables easier to get, but i REALLY think there should be a bonus unlock for getting every achievement, and it doesnt replace anything. just some reward for working hard at it.
the only thing i’ve thought of so far is giving the soldier the nades on his shirt. valve didnt bring the nades from TFC because they said they wanted every class to be different, and the old nades did the opposite of that.
however if they give only ONE class the nades (obviously the soldier, he already has them!!) it would work that out.

on a side note, i think valve should do one last thing for the medic, one last update. remember when his pack came out and everyone played medic? and everyone else was mad? well now that the medics are gone (all but completely replaced by pyros) i for one sincerely miss the swarm of medics.

    Wellll…

I had 20. Joined a server, 21. 1 from ubersaw. I do not regret farming Medical Intervention for it. It’s one I would probably have gotten, but now my Ubersaw would like to have a word with you.

  • 7 Curiosity // Jun 23, 2008 at 11:24 pm

Is is sad that the first thing I did upon reading this was jump on Steam to check my achievements? Just to see if I had enough for the Ubersaw.

I’m not even going to be playing the game tonight!

Also - YES! I gots me an ubersaw!!! Woooooo

  • 8 Postie // Jun 23, 2008 at 11:27 pm

I like the spacing of the new unlocks, you need to invest a little bit of time to get to the first one, but after that the others don’t seem ridiculously out of reach.

If it results in less people ubering scouts, I’m glad. On a side note, I spent 3 days trying to get “First do no harm”, and man, it was SO sweet when I got that blood-thirsty saw.

  • 10 randomscripter // Jun 23, 2008 at 11:50 pm

Excellent, now Valve is catching on.

  • 11 RC-1290'Dreadnought' // Jun 24, 2008 at 1:02 am

Damn I just DID cancel my supscription(just had to say that because comment #2 was brilliant)

  • 12 Pwnzerfaust // Jun 24, 2008 at 1:04 am

I think people who get all the achievements should just get a nifty new outfit. It gives the achiever the ability to flaunt his lack of girlfriend and it doesn’t unbalance the game; everyone wins!

  • 13 Hungry Heavy // Jun 24, 2008 at 2:26 am

Phatman… what are you talking about? The Demoman already has grenades.

Instead can’t you take solace in the spiritual reward of an arbitrary bit that you got through farming?

You can’t really get all medic achievements without farming. No no, don’t try to contradict this. Or do heavys just naturally whip out their fists whenever you uber them?

This is why I think the proper reward would be to get paid. Farming is a job. Where’s my money?

  • 14 John // Jun 24, 2008 at 2:30 am

I kinda agree about a reward for those few who have unlocked every achievement… just so they can show of a little. Something cosmetic perhaps, like a medal on the soldier, or a mustache for the medic (Come on, you know you want one).

  • 15 Error1 // Jun 24, 2008 at 2:37 am

I never thought I would get the ubersaw. I didn’t want to farm for it and knew I would never get achievements like Big Pharma otherwise.
People will still get all of the achievements even if there is no reward for it.

  • 16 Punjabi Fury // Jun 24, 2008 at 2:44 am

I just realised that if Valve continue with 38 achievements per class for the next 7 classes there’ll be a total of 360 achievements and 54 weapons by the end.

    That’s a lot.

  • 17 Rodafowa // Jun 24, 2008 at 3:17 am

    Get IN!

This is great news. They would have been better off not making most of the Medic acheivements nigh-impossible unless you were cheating, but at least this takes the most ridiculous ones out of play.

  • 18 Draco_2k // Jun 24, 2008 at 3:34 am

    FUCK YEAH UBERSAW

  • 19 Man Raised By Puffins // Jun 24, 2008 at 3:45 am

Thank Christ! I thought I’d never get my ubersaw, I’ve only managed to get 22 achievements so far since I steadfastly refuse to farm.

  • 20 Ravu al Hemio // Jun 24, 2008 at 3:48 am

Yay! Now I don’t have to search for four more temporary Steam Friends to übercharge and get that bloody saw!

  • 21 Erik Z // Jun 24, 2008 at 5:03 am

Getting the ubersaw when trying to get Pryo achievements is weird.

  • 22 jp.frothy // Jun 24, 2008 at 8:37 am

you actually unlock the medic achievements at 10, 16, 22 for some reason.

  • 23 WeakLemonDrink // Jun 24, 2008 at 8:42 am

Those figures include the Milestone achievements, though.

  • 24 The Linker // Jun 24, 2008 at 8:49 am

This is brilliant! I KNEW they’d do this soon. Woo-hoo! Now the achievements can be obtained the way they’re meant to be obtained; in normal play, and it’s MORE than do-able. This is so awesome. :D

    kick ass

  • 26 LactoseTheIntolerant // Jun 24, 2008 at 12:25 pm

    A wise move indeed.

  • 27 Afevis // Jun 24, 2008 at 12:54 pm

It was funny seeing everybody’s reaction when I unlocked two of the medic milestones in one kill. :P

  • 28 Baejung92 // Jun 24, 2008 at 2:22 pm

thanks to this i got all three earlier today!!

  • 29 Matt // Jun 24, 2008 at 2:30 pm

I liked suddenly getting milestone 3 after burning somebody as pyro, about 20 minutes into playing.

  • 30 Niteowl // Jun 24, 2008 at 2:34 pm

I’m SO glad more medics got the uber saw now. I can’t get enough giggles mowing down OMG-I’m-The-BEST-MEDIC-EVER!! players running at me with that silly melee weapon out.

Depleted uranium is MADE to be embedded in the soft tissue of Germanic medical personnel, IMHO.

  • 31 Kokits // Jun 24, 2008 at 4:37 pm

This is interesting (and completely off-topic). But the folks over at the official TF2 blog (http://teamfortress.com/) just released how the medigun works in TF2, it’s quite interesting.

Apparently, the longer the healing target has gone without being, the faster the medigun heals them. The standard heal rate is 24 HP a second. If they have gone 12.5 seconds without being hit, they will be healed 48 HP a second, 15 seconds and they are healed a whopping 72 HP A SECOND!!

    It’s quite an interesting read.

  • 32 jp.frothy // Jun 24, 2008 at 9:13 pm

    @ WeakLemonDrink:

thanks, didn’t do my math :p

  • 33 AlphaHawk // Jun 24, 2008 at 10:29 pm

Someone being burned to death with 10 health isn’t going to give a shit about the math sadly :/ I can see “OMFG HEAL ME!!!” as a more realistic equation :D

  • 34 Wossname // Jun 25, 2008 at 2:13 am

I’m still hoping for an unlockable taunt or some similar fluff for getting everything in a class’ achievement pack, especially now that milestone #3 is so much easier to achieve.

  • 35 Erik Z // Jun 25, 2008 at 4:42 am

Hm. I wonder if it’s possible to add a mod to show the player how long they’ve gone without being hurt. 12.5 seconds is a pretty long time in TF2. But if you’ve waited that long, 15 seconds isn’t much longer and a huge advantage.

  • 36 Gothic // Jun 25, 2008 at 5:53 am

    Friggin finally.

  • 37 Sam // Jun 25, 2008 at 3:37 pm

Good. I recently started playing TF2 on the PC, so it’ll be easier for me to get hold of those new weapons.

  • 38 PsychoDuck // Jun 25, 2008 at 8:10 pm

Well, I suppose this explains how I got Medic Milestone 1 while playing as Pyro the other day.

    The Duck Has Spoken.
