The Massive Crits comic competition, which involved readers explaining where the hell my comic was and why it was taking so long to produce, has ended, and Joe (he of Massive Crits) has picked the winner. Full details here.
I think we were both surprised, not only at how many entries there were, but how good they were. How good they all were. I was planning on entering myself, because I thought it’d be funny if I won, but once I started seeing what people were coming up with, I decided to stay out. You guys are way funnier than I was planning to be.
I’m incredibly pleased and impressed, you guys did a great job and there were really no bad entries. I don’t think Joe had a tough time picking the winner, but I’d guess he had a hard time picking just one winner. Excellent, excellent job all around.
Check out all the entries, including the winning one, by Josh (who submitted several great entries) in the comments on Joe’s site.

Oh wow, the engie frame in the winner really got me. “You like dispensers, don’t you…”, with a giant grin on his face.

Chronos, are you this Matt Leigh guy, because I could not find your comic, only you saying that you would see what you could come up with?

Newt’s link has 1fort in it. It’s in the first panel.

The one who did the pyro:

would have been the best one if it left out all the other frames.

MASA: Newt’s link is the comic I made to announce the comic’s winner. Those are entries on the bulletin board in the first panel.

Akirasfriend, I don’t think you are dead inside. I did two comics and it was difficult to make them funny.
People say that the Pyro frame was already a joke, but really all of the TF2 character frames were already jokes. To make things more difficult, they were all different jokes. Then you had to try to theme them together but also match the theme of WTF 1fort.
So now you are faced with the conundrum of do you go for the obvious joke (follow the purpose of the image and string it together with ‘the characters are lazy/pranksters’) or do you try to be creative and find some non-obvious way to use the frame. With the first you risk it being tired, repetitive, obvious (not funny). With the second you risk losing your audience because you can’t craft content to show them what you have seen in the frame. Or you make it too wordy and lose the funny in the explanation.
I am hoping that if other people did not think mine were funny they at least fell in the second category.
I thought there were shining moments in several comics (Linker’s Pyro using the dumpster and Joosh’s Scout glued to the couch) but nothing really gave me an overall wow (other than Josh S. 3rd comic but that one was not meant to be funny and it was more for the art).
Overall I think the contest was an excellent challenge and really well put together. It is supposed to be difficult to make it good.
