Like a Little Love Explosion

July 16th, 2008 · 24 Comments · Gaming

When TF2 first came out, everyone who had ever played TFC had the same thought: where are the grenades? We were used to frag grenades, concussion grenades, EMPs, detpacks, incendiary bombs — constant explosions at all times. Sure, we quickly realized the game played much better without them, but still, there was something awesome about pounding that G key when you realized you were about to die, spamming the shit out of an enemy doorway, and taking out two or three opponents even as you yourself crumpled to the deck.

Well, someone managed to get some working grenades into TF2, which you can see in these videos. I especially like the medic’s health grenade. It’s the grenade that loves you!

All of those were pretty well designed… I don’t know how he managed to make that solider nade that shot bullets out before exploding.

What I really liked though was the few nades that didn’t do dmg, and instead helped out in some way. The scouts jumping one that doubles as an “enemy mover” was just great. The spy with the confusion gas and of course the medics heal grenade. I think you could put those in to the game right now…say only 1-2 nades per life. If the rest of the classes could have these tool grenades that’d be awesome.

I wouldn’t mind seeing this on a few servers.

These are really cool. I can imagine a situation where a bunch of scouts could push engies into “strategic” positions with the jump grenades though.

the scout would really be overpowered when you’re defending the main cap point on steel.

Who knows…. maybe in a later update they’ll put ‘em in. I prefer the game without them, to be honest.

    Who’s the boom king!?

Goddamit - now we have to worry about conc jumping again. Gah.

Well, at least it isn’t the medic with it this time.

I don’t suppose he has ideas for the EMP grenade, eh? I loved how that was a great anti-sentry/anti-ammo device.

Is it just me or did the medic grenade look like “The Holy Hand Grenade” from Monty Python?

  • 9 ZomBuster // Jul 16, 2008 at 9:20 am

@Seanybabes, it does, it’s probably based on that. the models are made by Valve and are still in the gcf.

Those nades actually would be pretty good, but if used in moderation. Put a recharge timer of like 10 seconds to reduce spam. Also the helping nades are brillant.

Oh and I suggest that the only way you can get them for that class is to make it so you have to get all acheivments for that class, and if you grind in one of those dirty servers… no nades for you.

“Those nades actually would be pretty good, but if used in moderation”

You obviously know NOTHING about grenades or the lovers of them.

  • 12 ClearlynotaRobot // Jul 16, 2008 at 10:08 am

So, are you saying we could use some grenades right about now?

  • 13 Koslov // Jul 16, 2008 at 11:21 am

    @Niteowl

I know a thing or two about the nade spammers and how they love to spray their love nade juice all over the maps and enemies like some sick Fetish video. Thats why I pulled out that hated word… Moderation.

Scout–No grenade, baseball idea that has been mentioned before. Low damage but distracts sentries.
Soldier–Basic ‘nade, pull pin with alt. and throw. Charges like stickybomb.
Pyro–Flaming Nade. Sets fire to anyone within the splash area but for less time than the flamethrower.

Engineer–Nade that shoots out nails on explosion, has knockback for spychecking.
Heavy–Nades are for Babies! A thowable baby instead. It crawls around for a bit until the heavy stamps it into the ground for being BABY!
    Demo–Has nades.

    Medic–Healin’ Nade. See vid.
Sniper–Nade that releases a snake on explosion. Snake may attack sniper and eventually dies.
Spy–Snoke ‘nade. Coloured smoke for the perfect getaway. Sentries do not work through smoke.

Lol, maybe some of those would be interesting additions…

  • 15 Mr brit // Jul 16, 2008 at 1:58 pm

The spy has a *Smoke* grenade

  • 16 Mr brit // Jul 16, 2008 at 2:00 pm

Also Koslov, real men eat grenades for breakfast.

  • 17 Joey // Jul 16, 2008 at 2:02 pm

Excuse me, but I believe that Jemaine is actually the boom king. some of those nades could be implemented if done right, but I guess valve took ‘em out for a reason.

  • 18 atomicthumbs // Jul 16, 2008 at 4:04 pm

Neat fact: most of the models for these were already in the GCF (missing textures, sadly).

  • 19 garash // Jul 16, 2008 at 6:14 pm

Theses are awesome, but the engineer should have the automatic grenade, not the soldier.
Just give a normal grenade to the soldier. that’s what he have in his bandoleer right?

  • 20 Nanosheep // Jul 16, 2008 at 7:03 pm

Yea I think some of those classes had the nades mixed up. Shouldn’t the heavy or engy get the nailbomb, whilst the soldier just get a regular frag?

  • 21 Vince // Jul 17, 2008 at 2:20 am

The HL2 mod Fortress Forever (Which brings a more TFC-style game to the source engine rather then the cartoony TF2 stuff) has grenades.

  • 22 Blaze // Jul 18, 2008 at 9:03 am

    Bleh.

  • 23 Generic Name // Jul 22, 2008 at 1:15 pm

I like it, but it better be really damn balanced.

  • 24 Jexowian // Jul 26, 2008 at 1:49 am

Hmph. As much as I love the Monty Python reference with the Medic’s grenade (fun times), I think the grenades make things just a tiny bit (read: REALLY) unbalanced in some situations, if not all. I guess grenades might be fun if you’re just playing with your friends who hopefully aren’t jerks, but otherwise? NO.
