And yet I still can’t get a heal.
Anyway. Goldrush! It’s chaos. It’s exhausting. I’ve played some small matches and some big matches and they all feel like big matches. On Goldrush, a 7v7 or 8v8 match feels like it’s got 32 people crammed into it. It’s just constant warfare. Fun, but taxing.
The cart is basically like a moving control point — there’s always tons of people clustered around it killing each other. Picture that last point on the last stage of Dustbowl, and now picture that point on wheels, slowly driving through the map. It’s that same level of combat, constantly, and it’s kind of an assault on the senses. It’s deafening, with the shooting and shouting and constant noise of the cart and explosions and everything. Oh, and the healing ruckus of the ever-present mediswarm.
We just have to accept it: the medic thing is gonna be kind of annoying for a while. And with all the medics around, everyone else is going Heavy, so I’m seeing a lot teams with nothing but medics and heavies, so, well, a lot of servers are just not gonna be a whole heck of a lot of fun until the medic craze dies down a bit. Which for me is a shame because I’ve been playing medic a lot lately and rather enjoying it. Still, I’m sure I’ll be in there grinding away at my own achievements soon enough.
Goldrush looks really neat. Nice sniping opportunities, a lot of chokepoints for engies and especially demos (I broke my demo damage record already tonight), pyros will enjoy all the enemies clustered together around the cart, and all the spies I saw seemed to be doing pretty well. Medics, well, it’s hard to say since there’s so many of them, but with those Dustbowl-like chokepoints I’m sure it’ll be a great medic map. Scouts? Hm. Probably pretty rare, just like on Dustbowl, except on smaller matches.
I also got to see what happens when the bomb reaches the final point on a pubbie. It looks great. Only saw it once, though — the defenders won every single other match I played. That very last point is a real bear to take, and heavily favors the defenders.
Also something to note: If you’ve got a friend who is buy-curious about TF2, a free weekend approacheth. All they need is a Steam account and they can download and play for free from May 2nd - 4th! In related news, if you’d like to pad your stats and backstab the shit out of some noobs, I would suggest playing a lot of TF2 from May 2nd - 4th.
Also, there’s this:

A friend unlocked the first weapon, the Blutsaugher, the new needlegun that drains an enemy’s health and feeds it to the medic, and let us have a peep at it. Here are some snaps:

You can even tell if a medic is using it on someone because little health pluses appear over his head.

It’s definitely nifty. I chased him down as a pyro and lit him up, but he needled the shit out of me, healing himself as he cut me to shreds. Granted, he’s way better than I am anyway, but I like that the medic can stand his ground even when he’s alone. So, when the guy you’re healing dies or an inconsiderate soldier you’re healing rocket-jumps to a ledge and leaves you high and dry, just reach for your trusty Blutsauger.
Not only all of THAT, but there were some other changes to TF2 in this update. Among them:
Added new attack animations to most melee weapons. Tired of hitting people with a shovel overhand? Now you can do it sidearm!
Teleporter effect no longer shows up on invisible or disguised Spies. Hm. I kind of thought it was fair the way it was — spies had to avoid the teleporter or hide for a bit after ‘porting. Slight drawback to the class, but reasonable.
Increased force taken by pipebombs by bullets and explosions. I think this means sticky bombs are easier to dislodge? Maybe a good move? Demos seem ultra powerful these days, to me, at least.
2Fort: Added medium ammo and health to basement hallways. Added small ammo and health to top of spiral. Look at 2Fort getting some love! Yeah, seems reasonable. It kind of sucks to make it all the way over to the enemy base, get hurt, and then have to run all the way back into the sewer room to get health if there’s no medic around. Not that that’s a problem right now.
Also, for Portal: Fixed a rare crash related to bone setup. I’d make a dick joke but, cripes, I have to get up in like five hours and go to work. ‘Night.

Gold Rush is about eight kinds of crazy, fun though, especially for a demo since the rails give you a handy-dandy guide to where your enemies are going to cluster in the near future…
But is it just me or does the map seem to cause more steamrolls than most?

Sadly, there’s a cheat that unlocks everything. I don’t know what it is, but apparently you type in the console command, and tada! you have all achevements unlocked. :( Cheap jerks who’re using that, i guess there goes all the effort :( Hopefully Valve’ll do something about that.
3 macho // Apr 30, 2008 at 2:11 am
all this and still time to work? And yeah, there is a cheat but I really don’t care - the faster everyone gets what they want - the faster I’ll be able to play medic normally again.
4 palker4 // Apr 30, 2008 at 2:21 am
Yeah i seen that cheat in action it just complete all achievements in one time i guess it is most likely exploit
but 1 good thing is that jerks who used it quit playing medic so more space left for honorable medics

If you’ll recall, Valve explicitly said that there was going to be two ways to unlock the weapons. First would be throught the achievements, the second way is now obvious: the console commands. Honestly, I’m glad that they did this, because now not every single person in the world is going to be trying for achievements that, honestly, aren’t beneficial to a team.

Apparently Pyro+Krizkreig is the new Heavy+Uber.
If used on a cluster of enemies (ie: on Goldrush) it can be absolutely devestating.
7 Ludo // Apr 30, 2008 at 3:59 am
The best part of the Kritzkrieg is receiving one as you’re running towards the enemy. The defending team, consisting entirely of Medics and Heavies immediately ubers as one in panic. Death swiftly follows of course, but the effect is worth it.
I’ve seen folks unlocking the achievements with console commands on servers I’ve played on. It’s a shame, especially as Valve have spent so long delaying to get it perfect.

I wont be using console commands/.cfgs to unlock the achievements, but I’m not averse to grinding a little. In fact, it’s quite fun to get a bunch of friends together and help each other out.
9 ttancm // Apr 30, 2008 at 5:09 am
achievement_unlock_all=no grinding and no dipshit teammates ubering scouts
10 Scolex // Apr 30, 2008 at 5:27 am
I’m pretty sure I have played a map that was like Goldrush a few weeks ago. It was pretty fun, so hopefully Goldrush will be just as fun.
11 AR // Apr 30, 2008 at 5:27 am
Yes. All of you grinding. Use the damn cheat and let me play Medic properly again.
12 Lack_26 // Apr 30, 2008 at 6:34 am
I don’t know how I feel about this cheat, I haven’t played yet but I’ll see later tonight. I’m going to wait for valve to give an official statement about the console command, just in case.
13 James // Apr 30, 2008 at 7:11 am
I just used the cheat, but I didn’t know it was a cheat, I thought someone was joking (Why would you go to the effort of introducing this update to have it unlock in the console?). Anyway, it works, I’m a bit annoyed, I wanted the weapons but I liked the idea of gradually unlocking achievements…I want to undo it now.
14 Crane // Apr 30, 2008 at 7:14 am
You do? Then type: achievement_reset_all
You’ll lose ALL your achievements, so use the list HERE: http://boards.gamefaqs.com/gfaqs/genmessage.php?board=437678&topic=42863132
to readd the ones you want.

@Crane
Thanks for that, exactly what I’m looking for, I’ve unlocked the 3 achievements that give me the weapons and reset the rest (A sort of half punishment for messing with the game)
17 Joe // Apr 30, 2008 at 8:10 am
I have mixed feelings about that. Kinda lame that Valve made it so easy to sneak around the earning of the unlocks, but good that we won’t have 8 people each match trying to be a medic.
18 Wossname // Apr 30, 2008 at 9:09 am
Hmmm, I have mixed feelings on the console command, too. I unlocked a good chunk of achievements through normal play last night, but did grind out a few of the special-case ones, such as ubering a scout and a punching heavy.
In the normal games I played, we tended to switch between going medic to get achievements… and going pyro to roast all them labcoats on the other side. It was a pretty hilarious cycle. But overall, I noticed that people who do not normally play the class got bored of it after unlocking the new needlegun.
19 Pants // Apr 30, 2008 at 9:56 am
This is a great time for spies though, I’m not even good as a spy and I managed 6 backstabs in one go disguised as a medic.
20 Mr_Wizard // Apr 30, 2008 at 1:36 pm
Goldrush is very Scout friendly, especially for the attacking team. A Heavy and a Scout tend to die just as quickly as they try to move the payload up, but the scout is moving it twice as fast, and can better use the payload as cover. Especially since they are so fast, they can quickly get to the angle that will block most of the damage from rockets and explosions. I dont usually play as a Scout, but I was the top scorer for a while usually because I was making so many captures. Goldrush is incredibly scout friendly, since the entire attacking team is focused on one object, you usually always have the support you need to keep yourself next to the payload.
Someone actually got the “You feel a little prick” off of me, causing a medic achievement chain reaction. One Medic got the “Prick” achievement, then a train of medics got “Bedside Manner”. I wonder if eventually there will be a youtube video showing 16 medics suddenly all get bedside manner at the same time. :P
21 Joe // Apr 30, 2008 at 1:38 pm
Looks like they disabled the console command. Well then, yay.
22 Mr_Wizard // Apr 30, 2008 at 2:53 pm
A nice trick for the last point is an engineer on that side sniper position,, that way snipers (and now spies too!) can take advantage of a great sniper position. I am trying to take advantage of it as much as possible since I know so few people know about it. When it becomes more popularly known, it’ll play more like dustbowl. But as of right now, a good sniper can decide a match if he can get there.
When I found it, I was a sniper, but I am crap as a sniper, so I couldnt take advantage of it as well as others might have. :(

I heard the updates were coming and checked early yesterday, but didn’t see anything… I check today, and looks like everyone’s gotten at least the Blutsagher
25 Punjabi Fury // Apr 30, 2008 at 5:24 pm
So, in about 4 hours total play since this morning I’ve got 30/36 achievements. Without cheating obviously.
I battled with myself a bit whether or not to use the console commands, but I’m glad I didn’t.
Of course I have the hardest achievements to go, 1mil heal points, 20 nemsis assists, etc. But it’ll be worth it when I have that ubersaw.
Incidentally, What about the possiblilty of a perma-uber with two medics who have ubersaws? One ubers the other, he hits four times, then ubers the first, repeat.
26 PhatMan // Apr 30, 2008 at 7:03 pm
good idea punjabi fury…
damn i wish the cheat hadnt been turned off. i wanted to use it on the steam friend list ones. as for the others, i wanna earn them. well, maybe not the scout one, ubering a scout is dumb cuz the scout just outruns the medic…
ubering a punching heavy tho is hilarious because the heavy’s melee is my favorite.
arg i havent played in a long time… been so busy.
when i finally will be able to start playing, everyone else will have already grinded out everything, and ill have missed the medic crunch.
i really wanted to pwn the medics as pyro demo spy or something.
27 alitheg // May 1, 2008 at 12:00 am
I had a medic uber me (as scout) at the start of a goldrush game yesterday. Actually worked pretty well to get rid of the defender’s initial setup (engineers, dispensers, teleporters). He - the medic - complained that I didn’t get him the achievement, but I was pleased with the damage I did.
28 palker4 // May 1, 2008 at 1:10 am
So i have Intern and Chief of staff(1 000 000 healpoints) achievements it seems that stats of my healing efforts are tracked to the past also
29 Luke // May 1, 2008 at 11:49 am
I’m looking forward to the whole medic multiplicity to die down, then start unlocking the achievements in regular play - just like in the old days, the pavlov-pleasure of the little achievement “ding!”
A pity the console command is gone, because it means I might not get all the weapons. For I cannot in any conscience uber a scout, or knowingly heal a spy.
In the mean time my mainly-moderate spying abilities are massively amplified, because it’s impossible for teams to keep track of their medics just now. Backstab city.

Yeah, I dunno, it’s been a few months, and Goldrush still favours Red, like VALVe thinks defending is more important than … uh.. offending?
