Tom Francis points out this forum post that makes it appears as though the medic’s unlockable “Overhealer” medigun will be a no-show.  Sorry, medics.

But back to me and what I think about things.  Last night on Badlands, I was playing soldier.  While running out of the base, I spotted an enemy sniper attempting to capture our second point, the spire.  Without stopping, I rocket-jumped off the ledge, shooting myself high into the air, then, while still in midair, I shot a rocket into the top of the sniper’s head, blowing him up, then landed neatly on the center of the point amid a shower of his guts.

I’m not the best rocket-jumper, especially when it comes to getting onto the spires, so I was pretty stoked not just to have made the jump but to have killed the enemy while in mid-air.  Which gave me a thought — maybe TF2 should have style points.

I know we’re supposed to get expanded achievements at some point in the future.  There were about 20 new ones listed for the medic, and I assume the soldier might have some sort of “Kill A Guy Whilst Rocket Jumping” achievement someday, but style points could be cool too.  Here are some thoughts for the classes and their possible style points, which would be just an extra point or two added to your score.

Soldier:
Killing a guy while in mid-air rocket-jump
Killing a guy with the rocket you are using to rocket-jump (always funny when it happens)

Sniper:
Headshotting a Scout in the midst of his double-jump
One-shot killing anyone while shooting the rifle from the hip (without looking through the scope)

Medic:
Downing an overhealed Heavy with your bonesaw
Needlegunning a Level 3 sentry to death

Demoman:
Knocking apart an ubered Medic and his uber-Buddy
Killing a guy with a sticky that explodes simply because you’re placing another sticky somewhere else and you’ve already got eight stickies up.  I’m not explaining that well, but anyone who plays as a Demoman a lot just smiled.

Spy:
Getting ubered by an enemy medic, naturally
Backstabbing a babysitting engie before sapping his Sentry, and being fast enough to get the sapper on before the sentry swivels around to shoot you

Engie:
Telefragging
Killing someone by blowing up your own dispenser (I don’t even know if this is possible, but it should be)

I don’t play the Heavy, Scout, or Pyro much, so I don’t know what is cool for them to do.  For the Scout, maybe batting a sentry to death while running circles around it faster than it can turn?  Pyros are the bane of my existence, and I don’t want them to have nice things, and I simply can’t think of anything for the Heavy.  Help me out if you’ve got ideas.

    Heavy:
Managing to kill someone with the firstround from your minigun, punching someone and killing them with that first punch

  • 2 Mr_Wizard // Mar 10, 2008 at 8:18 am

    Heavy:
Die the moment you run out of minigun ammo.

If you die as a heavy with a bullet left in your Minigun, you didn’t really play a heavy. >:D

Killing the guy that killed you, with a shot before you die… Maybe a dumb idea, but imagine this:

Enemy releases a shot at you from distance, but you manage to fire a deadly shot before you die yourself, killing the enemy…

    It happens! :D

Kersploded Dispensers do no damage, alas. This was a hot tip passed excitedly round the Steam forums for ages: “Guys, if a Spy saps your dispenser just blow it up!! it totally kills them!! it does like 300 damage!! lol!!” “omg great tactic i had no idea” “that’s so cool i gotta try this”.

Like Spies bleeding, sticky-batting, score-linked crits, uber-draining damage, spectating disguised enemies and seeing cloaked Spies if you look hard enough, this was never true. Some dude on the forums just made it up, and no-one tested it.

Those demoman ones are both great. I’ve just started playing him properly, and I’m starting to get the hang of using Stickies in close combat. Enemy demos still seem to be able to detonate them much sooner than me, though: even short-range shots seem to blow in mid-air.

My favourite moment as a Medic was Bonesawing a Heavy after my patient had killed him three times in a row, so the sawing made it a Domination, and I immediately taunted, and he played the Dominating music on the Bonesaw just as the real Dominating music stopped, so it sounded like a mock-mournful outro. There should be an Achievement for THAT.

Some of the actual planned Medic Achievements - like Bonesawing enemies while you’ve got full uber - encourage counter-productive behaviours that are going to piss people off. People whine constantly about finding themselves on teams only interested in grinding for achievements by only using the knife, in other games, and so far Valve have avoided it really well by using achievements like a teaching tool for good practise. I hope that leaked list changes a little before it hits.

The Spy should definitely get a style point when a Sentry kills its own Engy when trying to shoot him. It’s actually pretty easy to orchestrate, but hilarious every time.

Also one for backstabbing someone the moment they come through a teleporter - but only one point per teleporter, or it could get out of hand.

Pryo needs one when someone they set ablaze falls to their death or is hit by a train, or dies within a metre of a medkit.

Soldier and Demo should always get one when a blast knocks someone off a cap point that’s in play. I did it to a Soldier earlier, but his rocket killed me shortly after, and it counted as a Domination even though I’d just tactically pwned him and broke his legs. Where’s your notion of tactical pwnage, Domination algorithm? HUH?

Shooting no-scoped doesn’t result in crits, even on a headshot. Seeing a Pyro no worse for wear coming at me with red paint all over his face was a bit of a downer.

Another Spy one: Uncloaking/disguising and making a sentry gun kill the engineer.

  • 7 Pentadact // Mar 10, 2008 at 11:54 am

That’s a good idea! You’d think someone would have mentioned that already. OH WAIT.

  • 8 Christopher // Mar 10, 2008 at 12:01 pm

I absolutely HATE when I’m burning to death and fall just short of a medkit or the resupply chest. That happened to me about 4 times last night. You’re right, that would be a great one for the pyro!

Someone has been watching Dædalus’ class guides :D

^Yeah true, but he teh shiz. I enjoyed his spy vid especially, though it didn’t teach me anything I didn’t already know.

The thing about blowing up a structure to do damage WAS true… in Team Fortress Classic. No longer.

I just thought I should mention that Valve only said the Overhealer wasn’t working out. That doesn’t mean there aren’t going to be any new weapons for the medic.

Being a bit of a Pyro fan perhaps some good style point things could be

Setting 5 or more enemies on fire and escaping without being damaged, taunting a burned spy right as they die (with the flamethrower taunt of course), and circle-strafe flaming a heavy to death.

  • 13 sQUEAKYfOAMpEANUT // Mar 10, 2008 at 6:14 pm

Now that you’ve insulted pyros, I’ll never read any of your comics again.

    Harumph.

OH GOD WHO AM I KIDDING I LOVE YOU PLEASE FORGIVE ME

  • 14 Inquisitor Saturn // Mar 10, 2008 at 6:15 pm

Also, circle strafing a sentry as a pyro.

  • 15 Jimmy Tudeski // Mar 11, 2008 at 8:25 am

Heavy: Pushing an uber’d enemy off a point by minigunning them.

Also, I think spies should get points for knifing someone in the face (from the front) until they die without getting shot by them once.

Pyro: Flaming an enemy down to their last bit of health, stopping so they don’t die, and shotgunning them in the back as they run away.

Scout: Pistoling someone to death while you’re in midair (call it the “John Woo achievement” :D)

  • 16 MrThompson // Mar 12, 2008 at 12:08 am

    Engy: Telefragging a cloaked spy.
Really really rare, I’ve only seen it once, and everyone was like “WOW WTF LOL! PWND!”

  • 17 Jakeism // Mar 14, 2008 at 1:40 am

In a clan match a few nights ago, I was ubercharged by enemy medics twice.

    It was a good laugh.

  • 18 Anonymuzz // Mar 14, 2008 at 7:57 pm

In my opinion, any melee kill should give more points.

  • 19 zealot_guy // Mar 17, 2008 at 7:29 pm

Pyro: Burning an enemy pyro to death.
    Axing a cloaked spy./burning a cloaked spy.

    Scout: Scattergun headshot and point-blank

Heavy: getting a headshot with the minnygun.
getting a kill from over (long distance here) away.

  • 20 zealot_guy // Mar 17, 2008 at 7:29 pm

    OOOO!!!!
an achevment for ANYONE aught to be successfully killing an enemy spy while he’s cloaked!!

  • 21 zealot_guy // Mar 17, 2008 at 7:30 pm

    OH!!
    anotherone for spy
    Backstabbing the bag-carrier

  • 22 Zachary Jensen // Mar 21, 2008 at 9:43 am

Heavy: Doing at least 750 damage without killing anything,

  • 23 PhatMan // Apr 9, 2008 at 9:16 pm

    @Zachary:
    LOL, a good one.

Scout: getting a bat kill on each class, including the turrets (or maybe any level turret).

Soldier: i really like the rocket jump one, the one where you kill someone with the same rocket u jump with.

Pyro: i like Pentadact’s, an enemy that burnt to death by you dying within a specific range of a medkit/locker, without you still flaming him.

Demo: of course the disrupting an uber one.

Heavy: gunning down another heavy that was shooting you.

Engi: telefragging (never knew it was possible), and holding back an ubered with your sentry (when the sentry is powerful enough to keep pushing the ubered person).

Medic: bonesawing an enemy medic occupied with a patient, then bonesawing the patient. and definately something for the needlegun, it needs attention.

Sniper: headshot on a midair enemy.

Spy: insta-knife-kills from on top of them or under(?). and the stab-sap combo. those are tense.
