So, I farmed enough achievements to unlock all the alternative pyro weapons last night, and I’m feeling a little bad about it. Not guilty, per se, just bad, since I’ve got all the new content and don’t have anything to look forward to until the next Pack, which could be months from now. It’s sort of like wildly tearing all your Christmas presents open at once and then looking around and realizing there are no more gift-wrapped surprises until the next holiday.
I didn’t initially intend to farm them all. I played in actual matches for a few hours first, and wound up with about nine achievements to show for it, and just wanted the tenth so I could play with the flare gun. But by then, a few of my friends were on Mach4, and we started helping each other out, and, much like how having one shot of whiskey can lead to a night of heavy drinking, I eventually found myself on Achievement Box holding an axe I simply don’t deserve and realizing I overdid it. I binged.
Of course, it’s made easier this time around. There are thirty-five achievements, but you don’t need to get them all: the unlocks come at 10, 15, and 2o achievements, unlike the Medic Pack which required a full sweep.
Still, one achievement I’m happy I got in a real game was the OMGWTFBBQ. For a while, I’ve been hoping Valve would add one point of damage to the Pyro’s secondary haduoken taunt, but you can see why I’m a random blogger and they’re Valve: they think big. The taunt is now an instakill.
It took me a long time to get the achievement, during which I was completely useless to my team because, bomb carts and cap points be damned, all I did was slither around the map looking for someone to tiptoe up on and scorch. I first spent some time doing this on Goldrush, but with the chaotic, constant nature of the combat and the presence of multiple sentries, it just didn’t work out. I died. A lot. I did get a single kill with the taunt, after my team had lost a match, since the taunt still does damage even in the humiliation round. I saw an enemy spy knifing my teammates a few feet away, and taunted. He turned and walked right into my path. It didn’t count toward the achievement, but it was pretty funny.
Then we wound up on cp_Well. Ah, here we go. Plenty of ways to infiltrate and flank. I repeatedly swam below the combat on the surface and squeaked into the enemy base, climbing the newly added stairs to the second floor. I tried picking on a sentry until its engie ran over, and then taunting him to death, but this particular engie is a very good engie. He wasn’t falling for it and kept killing me before I could even get close.
Then, the moment I was waiting for — an enemy sniperdot appeared on a wall. Ah, yes! The slow-moving, scoped-in sniper, he shall be my mark! Even still, it took me a few tries. Finally, I got in behind him and began the taunt. He started strafing away to get a better angle on his target, and I thought he might slip out of range before the fireball burst forth from my gloves, but just at the last moment he reversed direction and stepped right in front of me. Taunt kill! I was pleased to no end. I’m pretty sure we lost that round, too, but who cares?
I think if I played pyro a bit more often, I’d probably liked to have gotten the unlocks legitimately. I think, also, if I played pyro a bit more often, I’d be annoyed at all the cheater pyros, like myself, running around flaunting ill-gotten weapons. Now that I’ve got them, though, I’ll go back to playing other classes, so at least there’ll be one less part-time pyro clogging up the works.

Nice one! Its a shame you aren’t able to have your death cam shots sent to you by your victems though. I think it would be interesting.

It seems like it might have been easier to just kill one of the snipers that you always find on 2fort.
4 The Linker // Jun 20, 2008 at 3:26 pm
I got my taunt kill within a few tries, but it wasn’t due so much to my skill as the interest of the other party. I found a scoped-in sniper on the enemy base and started my taunt, and he heard me, instantly backing away and unscoping. But then he saw what I was doing, and actually WALKED OVER AND STOOD IN FRONT OF ME. Guess he wanted to see what it was like, too. Got the achievement, and it was actually pretty entertaining. BAM!
I had 9 achievements for a while, too, and my 10th one actually ended up being to smoke 50 enemies from behind. With all that chaos, trying to flame the other guy while not getting flamed yourself (since, of course, pretty much all my enemies were also Pyros), roughly 45 of those kills were not intentionally to the back. But, I got ma flare gun!
I’m sure I’ll get my next five in the next day or two. I’ve got plenty progress on quite a few, like having enemies run in the water or finishing people off with the shotgun. Both those will be much easier once everyone isn’t a freakin’ Pyro. Stupid flame-retardent suit.

You know, it starts with a little accidental farming for TF2 goodies.
Before you know it, it’s 10 years later, and you’re logging in 20 hours a day farming for a +20 vibra spur and +3 Headdress of Swiftness for your epic mount while maxing out your credit card to a small gold-farming family in China.
TF2, it’s the marijuana of MMOs.
8 CannedLizard // Jun 20, 2008 at 4:03 pm
Yeah, I was very pleased to get the OMGWTFBBQ achievement without farming too. I felt I had to. I got it up on the battlements at ctf_well, but oddly it was from an opposing pyro charging (flaming) right into it. Perhaps he didn’t know, or hoped to get me first (and get progress towards Dance Dance Immolation). Either way: huzzah!
I farmed a bit (come on…ignite a spy flicking a cigarette?!), but intend to try to hold off on farming for my last milestone. Might be tough.

I kind of wish they had another way to unlock these weapons. It’s pretty lame to have so much incentive to grind away at these achievements. Before these unlockables came around it was always a very pleasant surprise when you did something that brought up the achievement icon and a special sound effect was played that everyone could hear.
Personally I wish they’d switch to more of a Battlefield 2 style of unlockable weapons, whereby you get a new unlockable every rank, which you can choose for yourself amongst any of the classes. And the way you get a new rank is by scoring enough points.
You wouldn’t necessarily need ranks, but you could have “levels” of a sort, and it takes a certain number of points (which you only get at the end of a round) to level up.
Sure, people could still farm for their unlockables, but it wouldn’t take anything away from the achievements to do so.
14 Tef // Jun 20, 2008 at 5:32 pm
Ugh battlefield 2 I used to like that game, but the bugs, engine limitations and the lack of teamplay turned me away. I occasionally play project reality mod for it though.

I know this guy who makes maps, and I know 9 people who aren’t assholes and can work together. It was like achievement box on steroids. 1 hour and all of us had it.
16 The Linker // Jun 20, 2008 at 6:52 pm
Defcon, you just have to give opponents a killcam shot of each of your taunts. Kill someone, switch to your axe (for example) right away, and taunt. Then do the same for whatever other weapons you haven’t done it with. I’m pretty sure there’s not much more to it than that. :)
Also, Chris, are you gonna give us your thoughts on the results on the ‘WTF, 1Fort’ contest? You KNOW is dying for your approval and general congratulatory saying!

20 The Cheshire Cat // Jun 20, 2008 at 7:17 pm
I can understand the urge to just farm for the new unlocks, I probably won’t use the backburner (But might mess with a bit), but I definitely want the axe.
Still though, I play Pyro a lot anyway, and I think it’s just more fun to earn them legitimately, especially the crazy ones like OMGWTFBBQ. The pyro achievements are MUCH better than the medic ones, I could see getting all of them during normal play (Although you might have to go for some intentionally like the 3/6 axe kills in one life), unlike the medic ones which both encouraged bad playing and relied on other people doing stupid things (Like having a heavy punch two people to death while you uber him?).
21 Super Jesus // Jun 20, 2008 at 7:40 pm
Yeah. I got 7 by helping with achievements, then I farmed them from a well-organized achievementbox. I don’t use the backburner, but yes to flares and axe.

23 nmanguy // Jun 20, 2008 at 9:57 pm
My setout is:
Backburner
Shotgun
Axtinguisher
That makes it good for any situation. And it’s fun trying to circle-strafe or jump over someone to score the back-crits. And 50 more hp makes it so you don’t die so fast in ambushes.
24 Reveilled // Jun 20, 2008 at 10:09 pm
I ended up farming for about 6 of them, to take me up to 18, and then getting my last two legitimately. I might have farmed the rest, but had problems getting the “ignite” achievemtents to count in achievement box maps (do they only work on core maps, or certain servers), and because achievement farming for pyros on a public server is awful, since everyone just burns everyone else.
Thankfully, I got OMGWTFBBQ legitimately as one of my first achievements. I stood at a corner in 2fort hoping to catch an unsuspecting pyro, and missed. But rather than flame me to death, this pyro decided he’d try the same thing, so I dodged that and figured I’d try one more time. Instead of dodging, he does the taunt again, so I get off mine first and got OMGWTFBBQ and Dance Dance Immolation in one move. Highly satisfying.
After staying up all night, I got my 20th achievement at the 24 hour mark, and discovered that even though I was absolutely exhausted, TF2 had given me stress-induced insomnia. I don’t think I’ll be touching that accursed axe for weeks.

I also got a taunt kill after my team lost on goldrush. I was at one end of the tunnel connecting the two areas of the map and I saw a pyro running towards me so i started the taunt and timed it perfectly. The pyro went flying but, unfortunately, when you taunt kill when the round’s over, you don’t get the achievement.
29 Baggie // Jun 21, 2008 at 3:14 am
Backburner - Good
Axe - Currently crap, no one wants to be on fire
Flare gun - LOVE IT.
Speaking of Haduokens, we were pushing on cp_fastlane, last cap, and we finally got through a doorway to the last CP. There was a pyro next to the corner, and haduoken’ed right when we went though. He killed 2 pyros and a medic. Make you feel less hardcore hey :p
30 Chijts // Jun 21, 2008 at 4:23 am
After trying the sneaky sneaky and hide round corners approach to get the WTFBBQ I just thought what the hell and tried to taunt in the middle of a firefight (as the enemy was coming our way). To my suprise a soldier just walked right into it in amongst the chaos.
As for the pyro thing, I’m pretty sure it was intended to be a guy, but now the community has been saying it could be a girl Valve will probably make it into a girl should the pyros face ever be revealed.
I’m personally glad they didn’t make some of the characters girls, because I like to play the gender that I am!
31 Trid3nt // Jun 21, 2008 at 4:59 am
The Flare gun is fun to use, I’ve been grinding to get 100 people alight with it (I’ve only played for a couple hours and I keep forgetting to use it). However, I don’t find it actually that practical, the range on it is good, but the low damage means that they can just run off and find health, so it’s not that much on on that front. I guess you could use it on people running away, but most of those people are on fire anyway at the moment, so there’s not much point. The only way I can see it being used is as a deterrent, for people like snipers, heavies and demomen who are at the fringes.
The new airblast feature is good, but I think it would have been cool to have one of two ideas:
1) let it put out friendly players on fire
2) Let it be used to increase the damage on enemy players when they’re on fire.
32 Rev. Name Withheld // Jun 21, 2008 at 5:49 am
I, too, farmed all the achievements for the Pyro Pack, and I have felt its repercussions.
50 points as Pyro. My last best was 18 as Engineer. I will have to stare that in the face every time I join a server.
33 Phil // Jun 21, 2008 at 6:17 am
OMGWTFBBQ is still on the list of achievements I haven’t got, though I am up to 10 now.
Managed to thwart another Pyro trying to get the Haduoken, though his lame attempt was to start the taunt in a massive open space, so I strafed round him and got Dance Dance Immolation. There is something quite defeating about being used by someone to get their achievement (in a non-farmed way I might add), but luckily it feels good getting them, and the unlocks sweeten the deal.
Gonna hold off using my flaregun until I have the shotgun achievement, but I’ve given it a test run (and it looks so niiice!)
34 The chicken // Jun 21, 2008 at 6:32 am
Yeah i farmed them to and i am a bit ashamed of myself actually. Everytime I join a game I see those 98 points as pyro. We need a reset button
35 Slamhound // Jun 21, 2008 at 8:23 am
OMGWTFBBQ is really the one you have to get in normal play.
I got mine climbing the sewer entrance in the enemy base. An enemy pyro was just standing there, back turned, just asking to be back-hadouken’d. So I obliged, just as another pyro (with medic) was coming the other way.
I copped enough flame in my face to make me weak enough for the surviving medic to needle me to death, but I managed to nail both pyros and get the achievement. Yes, it hits multiple targets.
As an aside, the taunt always did 1 point of damage before it became instakill.
36 Eother // Jun 21, 2008 at 12:23 pm
I’m glad I don’t farm. I’d feel so cheap every time I used the unlocks, realizing that I don’t deserve it. So far, I’ve only gotten about seven achievements, and I’m glad of it! When I do get my unlocks, it’ll feel fantastic. I hate farming…it kinda gets rid of the point of having achievements and unlocks.
Of course, that doesn’t count for the medics. They can farm as much as they want, given their stupid achievements.
I haven’t been playing pyro much, since everybody else is. It’s weird…most people didn’t really play pyro at all before the pack, and now the real pyros won’t play, because they don’t want to be seen as the aforementioned people (in my case, anyhow).
37 Eother // Jun 21, 2008 at 12:24 pm
Oh, I got OMGWTFBBQ in a map that had air vents (dunno what it was, maybe turbine). I was running through the vents with my shotgun out, and I rounded a corner to see a pyro flaming down the vent. I ran back around the corner, started the taunt, and owned him when he rounded the corner. It was great!

I was defending a point, wanted an insta-kill and taunted. BAM! OMGWTFBBQ party.
40 Phil // Jun 21, 2008 at 4:00 pm
Managed to get OMGWTFBBQ - infiltrated the enemy battlements on 2fort, smoked an on-coming pyro and a scoped in sniper, and sat behind the second sniper for the most comfortable taunt kill imaginable.
As a piece of research - I used the Haduoken on a stationary Heavy after a round win (possible crit bonus, though I don’t think it is crittable) and it didn’t kill him, merely set him on fire. It would suggest the taunt isn’t “instakill” per say, just reasonably powerful.
41 Charmander // Jun 21, 2008 at 4:40 pm
It really bother me that people sit in an achievment server and basically use a GameShark method to get the new unlocks. Its cheap. 95% of th epyros that have been playing lately are garbage at the class. Everything from not using the shotgun to not understanding that the open field is not our playground. I have 8 achievments currently. But, after dominating 5 opponents in one stage 4 of them being pyros i decided to take a little break from tf2. I have come to the realization that i am just THAT good @ pyro and that i only use airblast to hassle ubered players. Wait till i get my +50 health and the backburner…
42 Rosti // Jun 21, 2008 at 5:05 pm
I was able to earn my OMGWTFBBQ for SCIENCE! Turns out that taunting an ubered opponent doesn’t kill them, but does earn the achievement. Confused a few folk at the start of Gold Rush learning that one, but since everyone was uber’d it was all a bit surreal.
43 Oneperson // Jun 21, 2008 at 6:55 pm
Haven’t gotten OMGWTFBBQ yet, but plan on trying to get it soon.
On another note, the 1fort homepage still says ‘May’. Shouldn’t that have been changed to ‘September’ by now?
44 Erik Z // Jun 21, 2008 at 9:23 pm
Yep. I farmed for my Medic. Never again.
I haven’t even gotten the first bonus pyro weapon. But that’s because the servers are all crazy being free weekend and with people trying to get their pyro achievements.
I just pick an appropriate class for the moment now.
45 Lack_26 // Jun 22, 2008 at 5:02 am
I’ve almost got the 3rd unlock without any farming, just need to finish controlled burn. Also I got OMGWTFBBQ in one match, then did it to 2 other people in the same game (2fort is a blessing for that).
46 Ixtab // Jun 22, 2008 at 8:09 am
I’ve often been tempted to farm the medic ones because some of them are so rediculous and I would like to try out the ubersaw (I haven’t farmed them yet) but the pyro ones I enjoy achieving without farming because they’re a lot more reasonable. I managed to get the axe without much difficulty, admittedly I didn’t sleep very much and just played TF2 for a long time.
I approve of the 10 15 and 20 unlocks much more than having to get them all because I want the weapons and it lets you decide which achievements are just too stupid for you. I’m still going trying to get all the achievements though. Pyromancer is going to take forever and the axing 6 people in a life seems to be difficult.
I also love all the exclamations of “WTF?” when I kill people after my team has lost with the hadouken. :D
47 Lack_26 // Jun 22, 2008 at 8:28 am
I got the axe a couple of minutes ago, I was top of the server by a good 30 points (32 player), anyway I was pleased with that (I don’t farm achievements, that’s as good as cheating). I feel like I’ve earned them, the medic ones weren’t that enjoyable to get, I mean I had fun but some were just stupid. The pyro ones I love however, now I just need to find some arrogant spy to light his cigarette,
When I go spy I make a habit of showing off and doing that taunt over peoples bodies (if I can’t see move backs to stab), it even got one pyro his achievement, I felt just as pleased for him as he did.
48 Alexander // Jun 22, 2008 at 10:33 am
The patern sofar seems to be the primary and melee weapons are great, while the secondary are good for a while but arn’t so great. Kritzkrieg kinda sucks and the flaregun is virtually useless when EVERYONE IS A PYRO…

“I think, also, if I played pyro a bit more often, I’d be annoyed at all the cheater pyros, like myself, running around flaunting ill-gotten weapons.”
As a “real” pyro (or at least, I like to think of myself as one) this honestly doesn’t bother me. to be fair, I farmed the achievements for medic and pyro because honestly, doing stupid stuff in a server with friends is more fun than…not doing that.
If I have not other considerations, I’ll usually choose Pyro, but the current pyro-glut has given me a chance to go back to Medic and remind myself why I enjoyed him so much pre-Medic pack (I played Medic a lot for a while, then stopped and played almost exclusively Pyro once he became cool because I’m underground and too hip for mainstream…or something).

Im very much with everyone that has posted so far. The medic unlocks are ridiculous without assistance but the pyro ones look to be very very achievable during game play. However, I have resisted playing pyro so far.
Played cp_fastlane for about 3 hours on Friday as a medic. Only non pyro on my team. We sucked until some of the others turned into soldiers and engineers. At which point 25 wins in a row. Not much fun being a medic at the moment.
What does everyone of the new maps the servers I see have only had cp_fastlane so far.

There’s a great thread on the Steam forums entitled “Have you been killed by the Hadouken taunt?” and one of the replies is:
“No, I’m still a man.”

I was just doing a TF2 quickie and I was lagging like hell. But I noticed how blind the snipers were after I easily got that “burn scoped snipers” achievment so the next one I saw; “HADOUKEN!”. It was awesome, and earned me my first milestone.(That time I randomly taunt- killed my nemesis when the game ended a tie was pretty cool too.)
I’ll have to try the Flare gun later when my game isn’t lagging like hell.
56 Xsjado // Jun 25, 2008 at 7:40 am
I managed to get OMGWTFBBQ on 2fort. An engie kept trying to setup a sentry in the doorway of his base. Normally a soldier would blow everything up pretty quick, but he persevered. One time, just as he built the dispenser I ran up and took my chance; both building an builder went up in a blast of flames. I ran away, screaming with laughter.
I’ve seen several people get it simply by taunting during the middle of a push, although they usually die.
I fear that I may have to farm the spy cigarette one though. I’ve never seen a spy taunt outside of the humiliation round, the class isn’t exactly suited to standing around in the middle of the enemy base.

I’ll admit it, after a couple hours playing after the medic pack came out –which was pretty much farming, since both teams were a medic-healing orgy for the 10k heal in a life or whatever– I went and persevered in a few hectic achievement servers to farm the ridiculous achievs for my gear. I don’t regret it, but it is annoying to see my stats on the loading screen dwarfed by my 940 points and 240million healing I got from like 4 seconds in a hacked server. I got the blutsauger and ubergun, but not the ubersaw since I figured I sucked so much at meleeing I’d never find a use for it. Quite hilariously, I was playing Pyro when his/her pack came out, and suddenly got a screen telling me I’d won the ubersaw! Apparently I got the last Medic achiev I needed by playing Pyro and defending a point.
I got all my Pyro achievs legitimately and it feels good! It was fun having a reason to play Pyro, who was my 2nd-to-least favorite class. I learned how to play it well, and it is one of my faves now. I love the backburner when I’m able to sneak up on people (or dance around confused heavies), and the 50 HP is very nice. The flare gun I expected to hate, I just wanted it so I could get another achiev and go back to the shotty. Now I love it! despite the flight time a lot of my shots connect, and lighting everyone on fire from afar is about as terrorizing as from up close. It screws me underwater, but hey I’m not there that often and normally it’s against a scout who would rock me anyway.
For all of you flare gun haters, keep in mind that it actually does base damage when it hits. I’ve heard it’s about 30, but never checked. So your trade-off is: shotgun does large damage (dunno the point-blank amount), but has short range. My flamethrower is short range, so I’m not missing much. The flare gun has a set base damage, plus DoT, at ANY range. It even arcs, which can be tricky, but I can hide behind things and light snipers or heavies on fire w/o worrying about death. It has worked just as well for finishing enemies off as the shotgun did, and I can do more damage once they’re really far away. I just run around firing it everywhere, and get lucky quite often. A random guy running for HP, lucky flare, poof he’s dead! Random sniper terrorizing people, poof screwed up his aim a bit! Some people in a mob coming at you will turn and run when they get lit on fire. Others will distract the medic and his tank will die. I’ve destroyed turrets with the flare gun, and didn’t have to get within range of it. You can kill its engie because his health box won’t put the fire out.
Last thing: In another surprising twist of fate, I went back to Medic because a team needed it and I needed a break from Pyro. Just after I did, I got another 1-2 PYRO achievs that got me the axtinguisher! I haven’t used it yet b/c most of my meleeing is against other pyros, so it’d be useless.
