August 20th, 2008 · 30 Comments · TF2 News

To celebrate their rollout of the massive Heavy Update, Valve is once again offering a weekend of free TF2 play for those who have somehow not gotten it into their heads to buy the game.

The free weekend is from August 22-24.  All you need to do is install Steam, register for an account, and download the game.  You can even preload it now so you’ll be ready to play when Friday hits.

    Oh no, not again…

Once Heavy fever dies down, SURPRISE! Noobs everywhere!

  • 4 Koslov // Aug 20, 2008 at 4:43 pm

I just think of it this way:

    Now I can pretend like I’m a “uber-1337 spy.”

    @4 -

On a related note, I’m suddenly a proficient sniper as well! Yaaaay!

I need to get Orange Box, but it’s been like months since I’ve really been out (other than like the closest Starbucks >>)

You got the steps wrong. It should be Step 3: ??? and *then* Profit!

time to kill uber-noobs in arenas. gotta say, this patch may be the best yet.

  • 10 Ledundead // Aug 20, 2008 at 6:20 pm

    Xbox 360=Sad

Anyway, this seems like a great addition. I recently picked up Sniper, and I don’t suck that bad. I just need to work on moving targets.

is anyone else having a ton of trouble since the update?
VAC has been kicking me out of servers every 10-20 minutes, and i just crashed out of the game a little while ago.

i hope valve comes out with another bug-fixer patch soon, this update is really something.
having a team full of medics is alright, atleast you will get healed more often, a team full of pyros is kind of stupid, but a team full of heavies is SOOOO much fun, no matter what class you are.

  • 12 Baejung92 // Aug 20, 2008 at 6:29 pm

Well, I crashed twice since yesterday, but I think that might be a problem with my computer…

  • 13 Cpt. Falcon // Aug 20, 2008 at 6:36 pm

    TF2 is updating right now.

    Team Fortress 2

-Fixed an invalid skin crash on TF weapons

-Fixed a viewmodel related crash when switching classes away from Medic

-Fixed not getting the Arena team menu after watching the intro movie on Arena maps

-Fixed some problems with localized text

Nothing about VAC related kicking/crashing tho. :\
I read the troubleshoot thing, and it said third party programs running can cause it, and it listed xfire as one of them!
    1) that’s gay.
    2) i’ve been leaving xfire on during a game ever since i got steam, so it cant be that.
I tried shutting off xfire just to be safe, but it didnt work.

the only other program i have running is HLDJ, which is the program I use to play sounds over the mic (for example, falcon punch.)
i’ve been using that program for a while and it never caused me any trouble.

once in a GREAT while i’d get kicked by VAC, but it was so rare i thought nothing of it.
but 3+ times in one day? something’s up.

and fyi, i don’t cheat/hack, lets just get that out of the way now.
(wtf is VAC even for anyway, it kicks random innocent people, and yet aimbotters and wallhackers are fine!?)

  • 14 Putzy // Aug 20, 2008 at 6:42 pm

the idea is to kick all the innocents, therefore taking hackers meat away, rendering them harmless. like halo, with the Flood. Im…uh…im going to be flamed now, arent i?

  • 15 RobotLiberationArmy // Aug 20, 2008 at 7:19 pm

We dun talk ’bout those dirty CON-SUL games ’round these parts, bud.

I think VAC kicks might sometimes be due to connection hiccups, but that’s just a guess and I have absolutely zero expertise in that area. If your still crashing after the patch, I’d check the support site.

now if only my laptop could play TF2. why cruel world!

  • 17 rammingspeed42 // Aug 20, 2008 at 8:31 pm

Oh, Jackrabbit, we all laugh at your predicament. Let us all point and laugh in ridicule!!!!!

*Your Steam Account was accidentally deleted when Gabe spilled his coffee this morning. Get over it.*

    Ummmmm…..

    Yah……

    Sorry about that, Jack……

  • 18 rammingspeed42 // Aug 20, 2008 at 8:33 pm

Seriously, does your PC run it?

  • 19 Jackrabbit // Aug 20, 2008 at 11:06 pm

I was surprised when my PC ran age of empires 2!
i just don’t have the money right now.
    *sob*

  • 20 Nonomu198 // Aug 21, 2008 at 12:04 am

    @ Cpt. Falcon

Maybe… just maybe… VAC dosen’t detect net problems caused by your xfire or HLDJ…. maybe it detects your SUPER SILENT UBER HAX DEVICE!?

    @Jackrabbit

Actually there ARE gaming laptops… but they suck and they are expensive.

  • 21 Trid3nt // Aug 21, 2008 at 12:57 am

Apparantly a decent spec eeePC can run most games of the Q3 era

  • 22 AlphaHawk // Aug 21, 2008 at 2:57 am

Oh Dear God. Noob week D:

Just when we thought the afatty onslaught was over.

  • 23 Smurfy // Aug 21, 2008 at 6:52 am

Oh well, we can have fun tricking the noobs.

“If you shoot at the wall 30 times, you get invincibility!”
“OMG K” *shoots at wall for the rest of the game *

  • 24 RPharazon // Aug 21, 2008 at 8:41 am

This is both a good thing and a bad thing.

It’s good because I can trick noobs with the standard “F10 to bring up the mute menu” trick.

It’s bad since it’ll be inundated with noobs for a week or so, after the week of nothing but heavies.

I think I’ll ride this one out.

  • 25 Ledundead // Aug 21, 2008 at 8:46 am

You gotta appreciate the phalanx of heavies marching toward your base. Great fun, even on the consoles.
Also, Halo? More like GAYlo, lolololololololol.

  • 26 cixelsyD // Aug 21, 2008 at 9:22 am

I have the 360 version of orange box, but I have no 360 anymore. I don’t really feel like paying 40 bucks for something I already have (I have hl2 on my PC including episode 1 as well, so I will have bought that 3 times total…). Then again, TF2 on PC looks so fun I’m worried I’ll give in due to the free “demo”.

  • 27 Pixel Knight // Aug 21, 2008 at 9:29 am

Actually, my $600 laptop runs TF2 just fine. The only problem I have is that Intel graphics chips don’t support DX9 that well, but it runs at DX 8.1 levels just fine. These days computers come with 3GB of RAM for cheap.

  • 28 Generic Username // Aug 21, 2008 at 9:34 am

    “step 1: install game·step 2: play·step 3: profit!!!!”

    I cringed. :(

  • 29 Jackrabbit // Aug 21, 2008 at 7:15 pm

you bastards! if i ever get TF2 working i am never EVER touching F10. or shooting any walls. also snipers should deal with a phalanx of heavies pretty well right?
