Fallout Fill-In

September 25th, 2008 · 18 Comments · Games, Gaming

Some general Fallout stuff from the past week or so:

The original Fallout is currently available for free at Gametap.  If you’d like to avoid GameTap’s download thingie, it’ll apparently run you six bucks on Good Old Games if you’re a member.  Might try this myself, as I’ve never played.

Make sure you visit Fallout 3’s Prepare for the Future website — finally, a television with something good on every channel.

While fans of the original game are worried that Bethesda’s sequel may not be true enough to the series for their liking, The Fallout MMO planned for 2010 will employ the talents of Chris Taylor, who worked on the first two.  That’s gotta be a plus for the die-hard, old school fans.

Finally, RPS interviewed  Bethesda’s VP of marketing to find out why Fallout 3 is shipping without mod tools, among other things.

Hell yes, can’t wait for this.
Chris, you might find it difficult to play the first two Fallouts. What do you think of isometric turn-based combat? If you don’t especially like it, it will be hard to adapt to.
    Great games, anyway.

I’m sure I won’t like it, but can’t beat that price, and with my Stalker woes, I need something to play this weekend.

Wonder if they’ve fixed the bugs…I’m sure they’ll have the last patch at the very least.

Hmm…is it me or are the vo’s and actors in the Prepare vids…well…kinda dull? I mean..they’re okay, but not as good as say the other trailer for F3. I mean, where’s the goddamn ham?

    “I’m sure I won’t like it”

When I am King, everyone will be required by law to enjoy turn-based isometric combat. You can choose this, or Jagged Alliance 2, or X-Com, but you must like one of them.

I have low expectations for the new addition to the series. Why? Three words: live action videos.

I should amend my last statement. “I’m sure I’ll be terrible at it.” I may still enjoy it. Being terrible has never stopped me from enjoying Hitman: Blood Money.

Chris, Fallout fans like myself don’t generally like MMOs. And we aren’t really “worried” that Fallout 3 won’t be true to the original, we’ve basically been told by Bethesda it won’t be remotely like the original games.

The same thing happened with The Elder Scrolls when Morrowind was released(even Morrowind fans don’t like Oblivion), and Bethesda’s stance has since been,”You can’t please everybody.” If that isn’t just a big F-U to the fans then I don’t know what is.

I got Fallout 2 from a friend, and its a real hard game if you don’t use the “power armor early” trick.

  • 15 GothmogII // Sep 26, 2008 at 1:34 am

Pfft, Power Armor trick, weakling! Only bare fists for the strong!

Fallout 2 was a lot more buggy too, just in a different way. Luckily it doesn’t seem to suffer from that ’screen wipe’ bug that plagues the first Fallout. But having guards bug out and consider you hostile brings it’s own annoyances…

I predict about an hour of play and then shutting down due to ugliness and vaguely awkward interface. At least the first game doesn’t have a damn “tutorial level” like the stupid temple in F2 which has killed my enthusiasm for so many weird new characters.

I recommend setting the Game Difficulty setting to Easy. It doesn’t affect combat, but it turns down some of the skill checks outside of fighting and I find it makes the game a lot more enjoyable. But I’m a wuss.

You don’t find the brown low res. and general awkwardness of gameplay only adds to the game? I mean…I thought it was -supposed- to look like that, I only realised it wasn’t when I started reading about people complaining about those aspects that it wasn’t. But I still love it all anyway, that’s why I’m a little apprehensive about this new one. And one main reason, is the barreness I get from the gameplay footage, I mean..there’s very little extraneous detail, i.e. not enough widgets. Just little things that on their own don’t account for much, shrubs, wreckage, rubble etc. I mean, yes, it’s got plenty, but maybe it could use a lot more? I don’t know…

I am excited for this game, Bethesday has always made good games, and I doubt that Fallout 3 will be bad, in honesty I like this way more because I feel like I’m actually there instead of looking from the sky, taking turns firing a minigun into a guy.
