Doom 4

May 7th, 2008 · 20 Comments · Gaming

id Software has announced that they’ve begun work on Doom 4.

I didn’t play a whole lot of Doom 3, even though I was enjoying it. I just kind of stopped at some point for reasons I couldn’t remember, and never went back. But I liked the parts I played, they were scary as hell. Something to look forward to.

Eh, I liked Doom 3 up until the point that the monsters entered the picture. It just seemed back then like there was infinite potential in the game, and then they basically threw it all out the window in favor of monsters that will just come out of nowhere (literally) just to get the jump scares.

Admittedly, the game was scary. But I think Doom is way behind the times.

Also, id in general seems behind the times. Does anyone remember how hyped the DOOM 3 engine was supposed to be, and then it comes out and it’s cool for about five minutes until you play Half-Life 2 which basically blows it out of the water. I remember people talking about it like everybody was going to buy the DOOM 3 engine and make tons of spectacular games, but only a couple of games wound up using it.

I’d love to see a really retro approach that captures the simple joy of shooting monsters in the face that the first two did so well. The series is on the verge of self-parody already, so why not make it intentional?

I want indistinct pixel clusters flailing their poorly defined tentacles and charging straight into my minigun fire - that’s what Doom is all about. And the game should give no reason whatsoever as to why any of this is happening. No story - nothing but the protagonist’s square jawed face grinning madly in the middle of the HUD.

And for god’s sakes, no more films.

Unless they’re made by Uwe Boll, o’course.

Doom 3 was such a generic horror shooter. It just didn’t feel like Doom, it felt like a pretender. I say just use the formula for Doom 2, and insert it into a world with 3 beautiful dimensions. The only thing I reccomend keeping from Doom 3 is; More bosses, sparing use of horror, and weapon balence. I understand if they want to try something new, but don’t associate the game with flashlights in any way.

Site’s blocked here at work, but I’d have to guess it’s gonna be HELL ON EARTH. I hope they hire good writers. DOOM could be as creepy as BIOSHOCK or SILENT HILL or F.E.A.R. with some good levels and writing. RUN AND GUN is fun, but for a limited time. I couldn’t finish PAINKILLER becuase of that repititious formula.

I was happy when I found a Doom 3 binary for Linux. Because I bought it through Steam it was a bit confusing at first until I found the CD key (Steam hides such things from the user, which is a good thing overall). I as well stopped playing.

Before I bought it I had downloaded a “test version” ahem… I got farther in that before quitting.

Both times I quit were probably because I just am not a fan of horror games. I prefer to be entertained over scared… more like Portal and TF2 than Doom.

I liked doom 3 a whole lot, scared the shit out of me, and had a lot of fum when I found the mod for Co-op, but I had a few problems with it, namely -

1- Everything looks like they’ve made it out of cement for some reason, including the humans and monsters

2- There isn’t any medium shadows, there’s light and dark.

3- The monster in the closet became so predictable that they inserted a second closet in one of the closet in order to still scare you.

4- Nearly none of the scientists you meet are actually scared, they just calmly give you your mission, ammo, piss off.

    5-No duct tape.

But the main problem I have with this is that it doesn’t really have anywhere to go to. You can’t do another remake of doom 1 and resurrection of evil pretty well closed up any reasons for the demons to attack earth/mars/whatever. Hopefully they’ll pull something out of their ass, but I’m doubtful.

The first bit of doom 3 was awesome, then the monsters came. I stopped playing there, I hope they have the option to draw out the bit before the monsters, when stuff is actually scary.

I’m playing through Doom 3 right now. It’s definitely a horror game. The only part I don’t like about it is that the monsters have trigger points. That monster doesn’t spawn until you pick up the armor; this monster doesn’t crawl from the dark until you pass this line.

I do like that they kept it a basic shooter game without all the fancy movements of modern games; it’s either flashlight or weapon: choose.

I still can’t see the reason why would any grown, sane and non-schizophrenic person would get “scared” by this awkward and boring-as-hell game.

    1. Enter a room, watch lights go off/pentagrams show up/a cut scene.
    2. Kill some stuff, with the only real problem being the pitch blackness of everything (it is called Real Time(R) Ultra Volume(tm) Gamma Null(c) Pure Shadows(id) or something though).
    3. Go to 1.

Okay, I can imagine a person getting a mild shock on the first or second occurrence. But I though normal people have this little thing called accustomization. You know, you eventually stop laughing at a joke you’ve been told over and over, so why do people get scared by the 4728th imp behind the 3942th door is really beyond me.

It’s true, and a shame, that id Software has fallen so low. Playing Doom 3 showed that, while they could recognize what other people had done to make good games, they (id) could not replicate it at all. Someone already said this, but the whole game was basically “Enter a room, lights go out, shoot monsters, repeat.”

All you people who are saying you stopped playing halfway through and can’t remember why? It’s because you were BORED. The game does nothing whatsoever to grab you after the first twenty minutes.

Which is a shame, because I had really been looking forward to it. Ah well, at least there’s Half-Life.

I felt Doom 3 was a hugely immersive game. Listening to all the PDAs was awesome and really helped to create a sense of atmosphere.

The game really taught you to to if not be afraid of the dark, then at least be apprehensive of it.

I wasn’t bored on my playthrough, and maybe it’s because I suspended my disbelief and actually enjoyed the game.

You read The Stand, then? :D

I much preferred the start of Doom 3 over Half-Life. As much as I can praise both Half-Life games, it took me a few years to give the first HL a decent go.

Why? That damned tram ride. I was much younger at the time, but I was massively unimpressed with the tram ride. Then the walk. Talking to random people who have like three lines of dialogue. Walking. Walking. I found Doom’s opening a lot more unsettling, even though there are distinct similarities.

I -honestly- stopped playing HL and got into some Counter-Strike because I was so tragically underwhelmed by the tram ride.

  • 17 Mike // May 12, 2008 at 6:32 pm

The tram ride? Seriously? That’s what stopped you from playing the first Halflife?

It sounds like you people have the attention spans of finches.

A TRAIN? FUCK THIS GAME! I WANT TO BLOW UP ALIENS AND FUCK PORNSTARS!

Seriously, go play Duke Nukem or something.

  • 18 John Saflo // May 15, 2008 at 9:38 pm

Agreed, Mike. If there’s one thing I’ll never get, it’s those stupid people who play videos because they enjoy shooting aliens. I mean, grow up, right?

  • 19 John Saflo // May 15, 2008 at 9:39 pm

Games. Video games. Listen, we all make mistakes.

  • 20 Mike // May 17, 2008 at 9:01 am

Listen buddy, I was around for fucking Galaga, okay? I played fucking Area 51. I love shooting aliens as much as the next fella. That was likely one of the primary reasons for my defending Doom 3. But skipping one of the most genre-defining games EVER because of the 5 minute introductory tram ride sequence? Pardon moi, monsieur, but that’s RETARDED.
