I don’t know when I’ll be able to buy the game.

I’m getting a job real soon anyway, Safeway’s going to buy me that game!

I was ready to crucify Valve when I first loaded the game up and couldn’t find a dedicated server to play on with my friends. Then I just gave up and joined a random server. The server shut down. I was fuming.
Then I managed to jump into a pretty much new game with a few buddies. We just finished No Mercy on Advanced. It was absolutely incredible.
I can’t even shoot the damn zombies. I can empty a whole M16 magazine into one only to find that the server reads it as me emptying a whole magazine into a wall.
The game is incredible! Versus mode is fantastic! Just now I had a nabbed a survivor as a smoker who was trying to help his incapacitated buddie that had been taken down by my friend as a hunter. I’ve only played for a few hours and it’s already epic. I will say that I new that there would be no new weapons in the full game as opposed to the demo.

Jon Baker;
While playing versus a Boomer vomited on a couple of us and it came up “so-and-so is infected” then “so-and-so has infected so-and-so”. We were all infected by the end. Still no idea what it means / does, seems like a random thing the Boomer can do to make his bile contagious.
Versus is awesome! And very well balanced, too. I think it came out to about 40-60 winloss rate for the first 4 missions for all of us.
As for lag, you people’d better hope that you get to play on dedicated servers. Me and mah buddies got a local server first; impossible to play. So we reconnected to a dedicated; ran smooth as TF2 for me.
Also, “Easy” is not the easiest mode. Do “Versus” without infected opponents. All you get is a huge horde and the occasional Tank.
Also, wtf man. That one run through Versus on No Mercy got me like, 6 achievements alone. Sure, mostly one hit things, like kill a zombie with one melee, and get boomered without taking damage, kill 20 infected with an explosion etc. Anyone else do this?
On Single Player the Bots did great till the helicopter landed. I ran my ass into it and then waited for the Bots. The Bots were right behind me but when a Hunted pounced Francis, the Bots stopped to help him. Then they stopped to kill a Smoker. THEN they stopped to shoot a Boomer.
The Tank showed up and wiped them all out. Zoey made a run for it and he clobbered her with a piece of pavement. I love the Bots but I wish they had a smidge more self preservation when rescue is a few feet away.

L4D is quite fantastic. Played for a few hours this morning… different gameplay from TF2, taking getting used to. But so far… HOLY FREAKIN’ COW, love it.
Not that my PC would’ve been able to play it, anyway. The demo ran fine… for 10 seconds. Then my PC rebooted. It reminded me of Fallout 3, only this time I could actually see some ingame stuff before my PC goofed off.
Wow, I just picked up my 360 copy, and there’s only 2 player co-op split screen.
When did we, as a microcosm of gamers say “hey ya know that thing we’ve been doing since N64, well lets throw that out the window, even though we have bigger TV’s and better multiplayer games, and make it pointless for people to play games in the same room together…
If what #32 yourhero88 said is true I am so freaking pissed. Halo 3 had 4 player split screen vs, but I could let it pass for not having 4 player split screen co-op because it wasn’t a co-op game. But L4D is a co-op game, that the whole point. How could you leave out one of the most basic things, Valve is suppost to me smart.

ATTENTION STOP WHINING ABOUT left 4 dead split screen. Halo was designed ground up to be optimized for the Xbox. Its not just a matter of ‘oh lets put in this code’ on a console, things need to always run at 32 frames per second, and thats not even beginning to consider network issues. The point is, adding 2 player split screen is enough, and valve is not ‘lazy’ or ’stupid’ for not putting it in. They could put it in, if you were willing to see crappy graphics though.

I second bobic’s comment, with split screen co-op the game is essentially running 2 copies of the game - valve even stated in the L4D blog that they had problems with trying to optimise the splitscreen.
Still, being able to have a guest on xbox live is a nice touch.
@32: Valve actually really deliberated that. They couldn’t decide if splitscreen was worth it or not, since it’s harder from a technical level, and they almost took the easy way out. 4 player splitscreen would have been cool, but I think that 2 player is a great compromise.
Apparently COD4 doesn’t even have splitscreen to begin with. Count your blessings.
Also, I’d like to hear how you do in Fallout as a nice person, Chris. I mean, you probably missed a lot of quests since it sounds like you blew up Megaton for some cash early on… AFAIK, it’s the place your house goes, too, should you go that route.
I know, I’m asking to be shouted down by people who say “MUH! YOU ASK TOO MUCH OF YOUR COMPUTER!” but really, when I see things change from how they used to be I like to check out who benefits from the change.
For example - when airports banned water bottles more than 100ml from going into the departure lounge (not just onto the plane) I thought, “But, does that not just benefit people who happen to sell drinks after the security checkpoint for a big markup?”
Currently when I see that split screen multiplayer is being cut from modern games I wonder who benefits from that - instead of my friend coming to my house and sharing my copy they stay at home and play over the Internet with their own copy. So that means we both need to buy a copy, right? Does that not benefit the publisher?
I’m very happy that Left 4 Dead included any split screen at all really, (GTA4 doesn’t, for example) - I’m noticing I’m buying increasingly powerful computer equipment and bigger and bigger TVs but the number of players sitting on my couch seems to be going down.
And, frankly, the zombie apocalypse is FAR too cool to face on your own - totally bring a guest when you play.

Played it. Awesome. I must say, versus is, while still awesome, a bit disappointing. I mean, were you playing on expert (heck, even advanced), if a Hunter gets you down, you have about 3 seconds before you’re dead. But in this, I was slashing away at this guy and got FIFTEEN HITS and he STILL didn’t die. In fact, he still had a good quarter of health.
And tanks. Awesome to play as (I got the achievement for incapacitating an entire team as tank), but, like with Hunters, they do considerably less damage than they should.
Of course, I guess I can understand why they did this, as if you were incapacitated from just a single Hunter pounce or Tank smack EVERY TIME, it would be quite unfair. Maybe they should allow you to play it on “Hardcore” or something like that? (Of course, this might already exist, but I’ve only played on ones with levels of damage equivalent to that in normal…)

From what I understand, VALVe deliberately made Versus mode difficult for the Undead team, as your goal isn’t supposed to be killing them but an average of damage dealt to the survivors. Teamwork is still the focus!

Weapons are an odd fish… Valve claim ten, but it’s hard to work it out to that number.
1. pistol
2. dual pistol
3. shotgun
4. assault shotgun
5. uzi
6. M16
7. pipebomb
8: molotov
9. propane tank
10. fuel cans
11. minigun
If you drop the minigun, you can get ten out of it, but it seems stupid to claim that the minigun isn’t a weapon.
If you want, you can claim that fuel cans and propane tanks aren’t weapons, and stick in pills and first-aid kits, but you’re still left with the minigun out in the cold.
I suppose you could have
1. melee
2. pistol
3. dual pistol
4. shotgun
5. assault shotgun
6. uzi
7. M16
8. pipebomb
9: molotov
10. minigun
but it’s hard to justify calling the melee attack a weapon, since it’s basically a universal secondary fire for all the other weapons.
It’s a pickle.

Yep. It works out.

9. Medkit (?)
10. Pills (?)

From what I understand, VALVe deliberately made Versus mode difficult for the Undead team, as your goal isn’t supposed to be killing them but an average of damage dealt to the survivors. Teamwork is still the focus!
