Critical hits demystified. The Internet’s Tom Francis explains the how, why, and huh of critical hits in TF2. A quote from the article:
“… does a good amount of damage, even if he…”
Look, I didn’t say it was a helpful quote. What am I, a journalist? Go read the article! It’s actually a pretty neat system, and explains why that damn engie wrench is so crit-tastic.

That is quite illuminating. What about how spies seem particularly vulnerable to melee crits? Or have I imagined that?

Perhaps it’s because spies are the most melee’d characters? Most battles are are medium range, except with spies where someone’s a lot more likely to pull one of those double crit melee weapons on them…

Well that explains it - no wonder there’s always a crit rocket flying at me every 2 seconds. I still wish they’d retool it a bit, though.

This proves that my luck is horrible, because there have been several occasions where I’ve cornered a hurt person, and despite having done NO damage recently, they pick me off with one critical shotgun blast. It’s infuriating when it happens, but I think it’s outwieghed by the glee I’m filled with when I preserve a good streak by landing a crit when I’m barely holding on to life.

NO TF2 IS FOR KIDS, CRIT HITS ARE RANDOM AND THIS EXPLANATION IS NOT TRUE AND I WON’T PLAY IT BECAUSE I’D RATHER MY GAMES ARE A DULL REPETITION ON THE EXACT SAME DUSTY MAP AGAIN AND AGAIN WITH WEAPONS THAT ARE TRUELY DULL AND REQUIRE OH-SO-LITTLE SKILL YET I GET MAD PROSERIOUSGAMER POINTS FOR USING.
PS. AWPZ4LIFE, YO.

People like that make me feel good about the way I approach multiplayer gaming.
It’s perversely good to know that there are such people in the world.
