An Axe to Mind

June 8th, 2008 · 35 Comments · TF2 News

Unless you’ve been living under a rock or in a cave or, say, down in San Diego all weekend watching the Mets TOTALLY SUCK ASS GRRRR, you’ve no doubt heard the news:  The Pyro Pack is nigh.

One of the new items planned is the “Axtinguisher”, a fire axe that does half-damage in exchange for a guaranteed crit when used against an enemy you’ve set on fire.  Which means:  watch out, Heavies.  Watch out.
Less specific is the promise of significant changes to the Pyro class overall that have nothing to do with the achievements or new kit.  Less ammo?  Greater speed?   More health?  Who knows.  Watch out, Pyros.  Watch out.

    Significant Changes? Oh crap.
It’s not the most effective class to play granted, but it’s so much fun I don’t care! Don’t ruin it!

  • 2 Jonah // Jun 8, 2008 at 7:14 pm

I’m interested to see what the new changes will be. Maybe they’ll add something to show us once and for all whether or not pyro is a guy or a girl.

  • 3 GryphonStrom // Jun 8, 2008 at 7:59 pm

I think the plan is to make Pyros easier to play , not more difficult or less fun.

  • 4 Rico JB // Jun 8, 2008 at 9:12 pm

I think the pyro is perfect. I just love to play it, the only thing that I would love, but I know it would overpower it, is a speed burst; maybe a stamina bar when is full you will have 10 seconds the speed of the scout… :orgasm:
As I said i would not be fair but I would like to take revenge of those bloody-overpowered-noobs-demos

  • 5 [@] Chronos[Ha-G] // Jun 8, 2008 at 9:14 pm

Crap. This does not bode well.

Pyro’s my favorite class. I run into a lot of people that complain that pyros are useless - I wonder if valve is pandering to them or something.

  • 6 PhatMan // Jun 8, 2008 at 10:45 pm

i dont see how a dull axe wrapped with barbwire = more fire damage… but i cant wait. pyro is my favorite class to relax with, because i love to hit and run, and then watch my assists.
i really hope the pyro gets molotovs. that’d just make my day/life.

  • 7 PhatMan // Jun 8, 2008 at 10:47 pm

and btw, if the axtinguisher does halfdamage normally and crits on ignited people, does that balance out? just how much damage is a crit anyway? double?

  • 8 Stuperkid // Jun 8, 2008 at 11:31 pm

The crit for the axe is about three times as much.

  • 9 Curiosity // Jun 8, 2008 at 11:31 pm

As far as I’m aware, crits do 3x damage - with no fall-off on ranged weapons.

  • 10 Pentadact // Jun 9, 2008 at 12:20 am

The axe does 40-85 damage normally, and 195 on a crit. I’m pretty sure they mean the new one is going to do 20-45 on a normal hit, but still 195 when it crits.

Chris, surely “Valve Prepares To Ruin Pyro”?

  • 11 Draco_2k // Jun 9, 2008 at 1:13 am

“We’ve almost completely wrapped up the next big release for Team Fortress 2…”

    Is that Valve?..

  • 12 Trid3nt // Jun 9, 2008 at 1:17 am

to be honest, I would have preferred this for the shotgun

  • 13 ChaosFenrir // Jun 9, 2008 at 2:40 am

I can only hope Valve truly fixes the Pyro. As it stands now Pyro’s uses are far and few between that another class just simply can’t do better.

  • 14 Rosti // Jun 9, 2008 at 2:44 am

    Valve time, anyone? [http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Valve_Time]

Pyro’s my secondary class (Medic being first choice) and whilst I’m hardly the greatest killer it’s a whole heap of fun and other people die burning. My point is, I’m interested to see what Valve thinks isn’t working.

  • 15 DeliriumWartner // Jun 9, 2008 at 2:51 am

The pyro is one of the least played classes, as the medic was before that got more weapons. I think Valve are simply taking the lesser played classes and upgrading them first.

Also, who’s worried? I pretty much trust Valve to increase the fun, not decrease it. What I’d personally like to see is less assists, more kills. I think, if the pyro does more than 50% damage he should get the kill, not the assist. What do you think?

  • 16 LactoseTheIntolerant // Jun 9, 2008 at 3:34 am

I worry for the ’significant changes’. The Pyro is my favourite class, don’t ruin it!

Also annoying will be the amount of whores who start spamming the Pyro when this update is released.. I don’t want to feel a sheep simply for using my guy (girl?) of choice.

The Axtinguisher sounds interesting, as setting people aflame then switching to the axe is something I enjoy doing anyway. Nerfing the regular attack is good, but I wonder will it do enough to stop it becoming overpowered? I shall trust Valve for the meantime, though.

  • 17 RC-1290'Dreadnought' // Jun 9, 2008 at 4:15 am

They’ll give him the spies cloak, by default.

  • 18 RMChancellor // Jun 9, 2008 at 4:16 am

It’s amusing to think that, in a battle between two pyros, the one who doesn’t have the “upgraded” axe would have the advantage.

  • 19 WeakLemonDrink // Jun 9, 2008 at 5:54 am

    Well, yes, it’s called balance.

  • 20 Sam // Jun 9, 2008 at 6:41 am

We still don’t know the other weapons. Any thoughts folks?

  • 21 CHARMANDER // Jun 9, 2008 at 7:33 am

Being a veteran gamer and almost every popular FPS multi-player game since GOLDENEYE. I CAN TELL YOU FROM AN EXPERIENCED stand point, The pyro is truely underated. Have anyone ever seen a skilled pyro work? the push back one pyro can cause is greater then any other SINGLE player in the game except the engineer. Pyro uber rush in a small alleyway (ex.dust 3rd stage) = GAME OVER!!!… Pyros fallback weapon is the shotgun DONT FORGET TO USE IT. dont chase down your opponenets shoot them! Anyway…. once this update comes out you all will see that the SKILLED PYROS (less then 5 percent of the PYRO population) will stand far far above the rest of the other classes.

  • 22 Gothic // Jun 9, 2008 at 7:37 am

    Pyros are good griefers.

  • 23 CHARMANDER // Jun 9, 2008 at 7:39 am

Every class has their 2 most formidable opponents. The Pyros are the demo, soldier. these are the only classes that in (short)range give the pyro a hard time. AS THESE ARE THE MOST POPULAR classes obviously it is difficult to master this class as a beginner. TIPS for fighting soldiers? -Fight at medium range with your shotgun working back and fourth/ left/right movments avoiding the SPLASH damage and knock back factors. USE YOUR SHOTGUN ON SOLDIERS. THEY HAVE 200health and are SLOW. Demos… simply put watch out for stickies use shotgun until the stickies are exploded. Once that happens flamethrower RUSH. As a pyro if you do not have fast switch from flamethrower->shotty you Can.. And WILL get owned. Period.

  • 24 Inquisitor Saturn // Jun 9, 2008 at 7:58 am

A friend of mine who was in contact with Robin Walker found out that they were considering a number of possible changes to the Pyro. Some of the ideas they were throwing around were these:

    1) More flamethrower DoT.
    2) A Sprint button that would let them temporarily run faster than the Scout.
    3) The ability to build up a blast of fire and unleash it to great effect.
    4) More hitpoints.

Personally, I’m hoping for the burst damage.

  • 25 CHARMANDER // Jun 9, 2008 at 8:02 am

1= no its too easy to put fire out as it is.
    2=The most useful of all
-Circling sentries un ubered to destroy them.
    -bypassing heavy medic combos
-running through demo Zzzz snore fest of remote pipe bombs
-But this causes us to become a TRUELY offensive class. as currently we are more defensive.
3-blast of fire would be cool but definatley overpowered
4-hp would be overpowered as well as then we would have as much HP as a soldier

  • 26 Inquisitor Saturn // Jun 9, 2008 at 8:18 am

A fire blast wouldn’t necessarily be overpowered. it all depends on what its max damage would be.

The speed burst would be the LEAST useful. It would only be good for killing scouts and giving them backup in point rushing and intel capping. You can already circle-strafe sentries. Running towards a heavy’s front is suicide. Explosions are faster than running.

and the funny tags are gone once again .__.

  • 28 ChaosFenrir // Jun 9, 2008 at 11:18 am

Man Charmander has no idea what he’s talking about. I play in three amateur leagues for TF2 and I can tell you right now that teams that use Pyros are very uncommon. About the only time people use Pyros is Dustbowl stage 2 and even then only use him for ubers.

While I do enjoy playing the Pyro and know some of the best Pyros around, even they admit he’s a low tier class while other classes can do his job generally much better.

  • 29 AlphaHawk // Jun 9, 2008 at 11:21 am

Atleast (to me) they aren’t like EA and fuck everything up when they try to fix one or 2 things (Anyone remember the BF2 patch fiascos?) Would only hope it’s not too drastic.

  • 30 DeliriumWartner // Jun 9, 2008 at 3:34 pm

The pyro is good against an undisciplined team for clearing points. I like to think of them as the terrorists of the TF2 arena.

The point’s getting swarmed and you need a few seconds to rez the team. Pyro suicide mission. Sure medics can stop the flames for the chaos you can cause, and the made dash for meds, usually saves the point. I’ve done that a few times.

Course, I generally love flames too. Pretty.

  • 31 Charmander // Jun 9, 2008 at 11:43 pm

chaos, considering most TF2 players play in pubs my comments are accurate. and since pubs r the majority that makes your commens WRONG. everyone knows leagueplay is totally different in any game duh

  • 32 Mr brit // Jun 10, 2008 at 12:22 pm

Pyro is a fantastic class! The people saying he isn’t are clearly not playing him correctly. I have 26 points with him in one life (my highest is 32 with engineer) and he is more than capeable of taking on ANY other class.

Charmander talked about Demos and Soldiers and he’s right. But both can be overcome easily. On youtube there is a video calle ‘how to play the pyro’ by EvilDaedelus (I think) that highlights how to avoid these problems. People claimed the medic was rubbish but one of my playstation network friends pwns all as a medic, with just the bonesaw. This is without the update remember. Pyro is not to weak or overpowered, he’s a brilliantly fun class and wreaks some major damage!

  • 33 [@] Chronos[Ha-G] // Jun 10, 2008 at 3:11 pm

Above all else, you have to know how to EFFECTIVELY play pyro to be any good with them - it takes practice to get good at it. It’s probably best described as a class with a stiffer learning curve - they’re like the spy in that, if you don’t have much experience with them, you’re going to do horribly as them. But if you keep at it, you can be just as deadly as any other class, it just depends on the situation.

What I’m concerned about with the up-and-coming patch is what precisely they’re changing - whether it’s a straight-buff, or a change in the behavior of the class itself. Considering how used to pyro I am right now, I’m not sure if one, the other, or EITHER of those two outcomes is going to be good.

But then again, it IS Valve. They actually know how to keep class balances.

    I was at that game!!!

  • 35 Turnip // Jun 16, 2008 at 2:01 pm

I’m a pretty big player of TF2 (but pretty crap), and I do think that the Pyro class has a disproportionately weak flamethrower. To kill a heavy, you have to run around him in circles for at least 20 seconds and that’s enough time for him to turn you into pate with his minigun.

In my view, and bonus adding to the Pyro’s flamethrower strength or the amount of time a flame burns on a victim (after the pyro who had set them on fire is no longer doing so), would be rather good. I also think that as was already mentioned, having a speedier Pyro would even up the odds against him/her, as, from my experience, i get blown up or sniped before I’m anywhere near close enough to my enemy to barbecue them. I don’t know if anyone agrees with me, but those are my views.
P.S. is there a Zombiemod on TF2? Because it would be LUSH if there was. If anyone knows of a Zombiemod server, could they tell me?
